Alex Iwobi’s early life and family

Alex Iwobi, a 28-year-old football star for Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Fulham FC, was born in Lagos, Nigeria to a deeply oriented football family, he shares a lineage with the iconic Jay-Jay Okocha, his maternal uncle.

His father, Chuba Iwobi, a Nigerian lawyer who was also an ex-amateur player instilled much discipline in him and his sister, Marie Iwobi from a very young age.  At just four, Iwobi relocated to England with his family after a brief stay in Turkey, settling in Newham, London.

The bustling London city must have provided the backdrop for his formative years. Iwobi’s football upbringing laid the foundation for a career that has seen him become a regular player on both domestic and international stages.

Rumours suggest that Iwobi’s family oversees his wealth management, ensuring a stable foundation for their future.

The player is also a songwriter and recently became the first active professional footballer to record and release a professional song.

Alex Iwobi’s club career

Alex Iwobi’s football story began at Arsenal, where he joined the club’s ranks at the tender age of four while still in primary school. However, his journey through professional football was not without its challenges. Twice, Iwobi faced the possibility of being released from Arsenal’s academy, first at 14 and then at 16, but his determination helped him prevail.

Iwobi’s first call-up with the senior squad came in September 2013 when he was named an unused substitute in a League Cup match. His official Premier League debut came later, stepping in for Mesut Özil during a victory over Swansea City.

The versatile midfielder’s ability to perform on big stages became evident as he participated in the Champions League and delivered key contributions in the FA Cup.

Notably, he scored in the 2019 UEFA Europa League Final, though Arsenal fell to Chelsea 4-1. His FA Cup win in 2017 remains the only major trophy of his career.

In August 2019, Iwobi moved to Everton in a deal worth up to £34 million, where he signed a five-year contract under the guidance of manager Marco Silva, who helped him develop his skills better. A reunion with Silva followed in September 2023 when Iwobi signed a significant five-year deal with Fulham, extending his Premier League journey until 2028.

Iwobi reached an impressive milestone on April 6, 2024, becoming the Nigerian player with the most minutes in Premier League history, surpassing the record set by Mikel John Obi.

Alex Iwobi’s international career

Iwobi initially played for England’s youth teams, even winning the 2011 Victory Shield. However, he later made the decision to represent his birth country, Nigeria.

Iwobi made his senior debut for the Super Eagles in 2015 during a friendly against DR Congo. Since then, he has become an indispensable member of Nigeria’s national team, delivering crucial performances and memorable goals.

Beyond the World Cup, Iwobi’s focus extends to continental glory. He expressed his desire to emulate his legendary uncle, Jay-Jay Okocha, by winning the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Iwobi represented Nigeria in two AFCON tournaments (2019 and 2021), playing a key role in helping the team secure a third-place finish in 2019 and was an AFCON finalist early this year losing to Cote d'Ivoire. With 81 caps, 10 goals, and 4 assists, Iwobi continues to shine for the Super Eagles.
