President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Romuald Wadagni following his victory in the presidential election in Benin Republic.

Wadagni, who currently serves as the country’s Finance Minister, won the April 12, 2026 presidential election with a commanding majority.

In a personally signed message sent on Thursday, April 16, Tinubu described Wadagni’s victory as proof of the confidence the people of Benin have in his leadership and public service record.

The Nigerian President also praised the government and citizens of Benin for ensuring a peaceful electoral process.

He wrote, “This transition marks a significant chapter in your nation’s history. I commend the people of Benin for their resilience and commitment to the democratic process and to maintaining peace during the election cycle.”

Tinubu stressed the importance of the long-standing relationship between both countries and expressed optimism about strengthening cooperation under Wadagni’s administration.

He said, “Our two nations share a long history of friendship, cultural ties, and cooperation.
“I look forward to working closely with your administration to strengthen our bilateral relations further, enhance regional security, and promote economic prosperity within the ECOWAS sub-region and the African Union.”

The President also assured the incoming Beninese leader of Nigeria’s support as he prepares to take office.

“As you prepare to assume the onerous responsibilities of the high office of the Presidency, I wish you great wisdom, fortitude, and success.
“You can rest assured of my unstinting support and cooperation,” Tinubu added.

Nigeria and the Benin Republic maintain strong economic and diplomatic ties, largely driven by cross-border trade, regional security cooperation, and the movement of people between both countries.

Reps urges FG to lift blanket ban on degrees from Benin, Togo

Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that the House of Representatives had urged the Federal Government to lift the blanket ban on degree certificates obtained from the Republic of Benin and Togo, advocating a more measured approach to tackling academic fraud.

The call followed the presentation and adoption of a report by the House Committee on Public Petitions.

The committee’s chairman, Laori Kwamoti, explained that the recommendations were based on a petition submitted by Sovereignty Legal Practitioners on behalf of stakeholders in the education sector.

The committee warned that the blanket invalidation could unfairly penalise graduates who legitimately earned their qualifications.
