The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has officially declared Sunday, March 30, 2025, as the day for Eid-el-Fitr, following the sighting of the crescent moon marking the end of Ramadan in Nigeria.
The announcement was made on Saturday night, March 29, after reports of the new moon’s sighting were confirmed from multiple locations across the country.
According to the Sultan, who is also the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), verified reports were received from notable Muslim leaders and traditional rulers, including the Shehu of Borno, the Emir of Dutse, the Emir of Argungu, the Emir of Mabo, the Emir of Daura, and the Emir of Zazzau.
Additionally, the leadership of the Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS) in Jos also confirmed the sighting.
"Today, the 29th of Ramadan, we received reports from various Muslim leaders and organisations confirming the sighting of the new moon of Shawwal 1446 AH.
“Therefore, tomorrow, March 30, 2025, will be 1st Shawwal 1446 AH and the day for Eid-el-Fitr," the Sultan announced.
He extended his congratulations to Muslims across the country on the successful completion of Ramadan and urged them to continue upholding the values of patience, piety, and charity beyond the holy month.
Saudi Arabia also confirms Eid on Sunday
Similarly, Saudi Arabia also confirmed the sighting of the crescent moon and declared Sunday, March 30, 2025, as the day for Eid al-Fitr.
This was announced on the official X (formerly known as Twitter) page of Haramain, a globally recognised platform for the Muslim community.
“The crescent moon for the month of Shawwal 1446 was sighted in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated on Sunday, March 30, 2025,” the statement read.
With both Nigeria and Saudi Arabia aligning on the sighting of the new moon, millions of Muslims across the world will unite in celebrating Eid-el-Fitr on the same day.
The occasion marks the end of a month-long fasting period and is a time of gratitude, reflection, and communal prayers.
Muslims are encouraged to celebrate the festival with kindness, generosity, and a renewed commitment to the principles of Islam.
Ramadan begins Saturday as Sultan, Saudi Arabia confirm moon sighting
Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar III, and Saudi Arabia officially declared Saturday, March 1, 2025, as the first day of the Holy Month of Ramadan in Nigeria.
The announcement was made on Friday evening after the crescent moon was sighted earlier in the day, marking the end of the month of Shaban.
