The Malaysian government’s decision to phase out the use of natural gas vehicles (NGVs) by July 2025 has raised concerns among Nigerians, especially as the Nigerian government continues to advocate for compressed natural gas (CNG) as a safer, more affordable alternative to petrol.

Anthony Loke, Malaysia’s Transport Minister, explained the move in a recent press conference, emphasizing that it was made with public safety in mind. According to reports, Loke cited the risks associated with ageing CNG tanks, which typically have a lifespan of 15 years.

Once this period passes, these tanks could become unsafe and pose danger to road users. “If they are not replaced, they become unsafe to use and may fail at any time,” Loke warned.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian government, under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, has been actively promoting CNG as part of its strategy to reduce petrol consumption and provide a more affordable fuel option.

The Malaysian decision has prompted some Nigerians to voice concerns on social media, questioning the safety of CNG vehicles and whether the technology is truly reliable.

TheRadar compiled reactions to the announcement below:

“The problem is with the need to replace expired CNG tanks, with a determined lifespan of 15 years after which they become prone to failure. The worry here is whether the CNG tanks in Nigeria have 15 years lifespan & whether they will similarly be phased out towards their expiry,”  Femi Kukoyi stated.

“I will only embrace this is all ministers and the presidency lead by example. I can’t be your guinea pig,” Agi ji egbe! reacted.

“Nigeria wey..people nor dey conscious of safety...u put cylinder for car...sey na CNG...BIG risk,” BigerBoy added.

“Nigerians hear word it’s not safe

Don’t change your car to CNG you’re endangering yourself and your family and people around you,” Cozy stated.

“CNG is actually not safe , too frequent explosions. It's even going to be worse in Nigeria because of lack of maintenance orientation,” Master Dean stated.

“And Nigeria government is adopting it,” Joe Steve reacted.

“The government should lead by example by converting all official vehicles to CNG-powered ones. After three years of consistent use, citizens will then follow suit. Leadership is best demonstrated through action! Make Wike n Akpabio convert fess,”  Olusoji added.
