  • The Borno government declared a 24-hour curfew on August 1 following a deadly explosion amid protest
  • The police declared ease on the curfew for Muslims to observe Juma'at prayer
  • Citizens are confused as town criers warn against going out, and major streets are deserted

The Borno government has temporarily relaxed the curfew imposed in the state to enable the Muslim faithful to observe Juma’at prayers.

Borno Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Daso, announced in a statement issued on August 2 that the curfew would be relaxed from 12 pm to 3 pm to allow Muslims to attend prayers at mosques closer to their communities.

According to the statement, the curfew would be reinstated from 3 pm on Friday to 6 am on Saturday, and citizens were advised to shun all forms of violence.

The security agencies assured the public of adequate protection of lives and property and urged citizens to go about their lawful businesses.

The relaxation of the curfew is a welcome relief for the Muslim faithful in the state, who have been unable to attend Juma’at prayers due to the security situation.

The government’s decision is seen as a step towards restoring normalcy in the state, which has been affected by violence during recent protests over hardship and hunger.

However, confusion arose after police relaxed the 24-hour curfew imposed due to violent protests. The curfew was lifted from 12 pm to 3 pm for Juma’at prayers, but town criers continued to warn residents to stay indoors, and major streets remained deserted and businesses closed. The curfew will resume from 3 pm Friday until 6 am Saturday.
