- Representatives from the Ministry of Education paid a condolence visit to the family and gave them N500,000 to console them
The Ogun State Government has shut down Obada Grammar School Obada, Idi-Emi, over the death of Monday Arijo, an SS2 student of the school who tragically died on Friday, October 18.
The student died from complications after allegedly receiving 164 strokes of the cane from a teacher of the school, Amzadjo Elijah, who has since been arrested alongside the principal.
The state government earlier suspended the teacher and queried the principal for allowing such punishment on the student, which is against the state’s rules and regulations.
The principal, Mrs Tamrat Onaolapo, has also been suspended by the government.
According to Punch, Governor Dapo Abiodun's Chief Press Secretary, Mr Lekan Adeniran, disclosed this in a statement sent to newsmen on Tuesday, October 29.
The statement reads: “The closure of the school was based on the directive of the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, who has also directed that a panel should be set up to investigate the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident.
“The governor has promised that those liable by the outcome of the investigation will be made to face the full wrath of the law”
According to the Guardian, representatives of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology visited the victim’s family to offer their condolences. They assured the family that a thorough investigation will be carried out to ensure justice is served.
A condolence letter and the sum of N500,000 were given to the deceased’s family to commiserate with them over the loss.
Among the representatives who visited the family are the Director of the Secondary and Higher Education Department in the Ministry; the Principals General, Egba and Yewa Divisions; the Zonal Education Officer, Imeko Afon; representatives of All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS); Ogun State President, Trade Union Congress and the Ogun State Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS).

Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that the Ogun State Government trended on social media for allegedly demanding job seekers to pay N10,000 for application form for employment into its civil service.
According to a report by Sahara Reporters, the directive was contained in a memo signed by the Permanent Secretary Commission, Jacobs R.O, on behalf of the Ogun State Civil Service Commission.
