We have highlighted the five most important developments in the news today, Thursday, July 4, and present them below.

5 issues in the news that should matter to you today

1. JAMB uncovers 3,000 fake graduates: The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board has uncovered 3,000 fake graduates who never set foot within the four walls of a classroom. The board also decried the issue of illegal admissions by some institutions, which, it said, had remained a source of embarrassment to the country. The Registrar, Prof Ishaq Oloyede, disclosed this during a meeting with the leadership of the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State Universities in Abuja.

2. POS agents and SMEs have 3 days to register their businesses: Michael Nwabufo, Corporate Affairs Commission ambassador, has urged point-of-sale agents and small businesses to promptly comply with the mandatory registration of businesses with the Corporate Affairs Commission ahead of the deadline, July 7, 2024.

3. Businesses grounded, house collapses as flood overtakes Lagos: Business and commercial activities were grounded on Wednesday, July 3, following a 10-hour downpour in many parts of Lagos and Ogun states. The resulting flooding brought down a two-storey building in the Mushin area of Lagos, grounded vehicular movement on the roads, and overwhelmed thousands of residents while pupils could not attend schools in parts of the states.

Some affected flooded areas, such as Iyana-Oworo, Agege, Ijegun-Isheri Osun, Gbagada and Lagos Island in Lagos State, observed that roads and houses were flooded as a result of long hours of downpour.

4. South-East leaders step up moves to free Nnamdi: Igbo leaders have sustained their pressure on the Federal Government for the release of the embattled leader of the Independent Peoples of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, with a visit to the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, in Abuja on July 3.

15 senators from the Southeast, led by a former Abia State Deputy Governor, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, met with the AGF to plead with President Bola Tinubu for Kanu’s release.

5. Lawmakers’ pay not jumbo, I earned N25.4m – Ex-Speaker Dogara: Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has said he earned a total allowance of N25m and N400,000 monthly salary as leader of the 8th lower legislative chamber. The Peoples Democratic Party chieftain said the clarification had become necessary given the public perception that federal lawmakers earn huge salaries and emoluments.

According to Dogara, the misconception of huge salaries and allowances by Nigerians has given the National Assembly a negative image, leading to them being called thieves at public events.
