After months of heatwaves in Lagos, the residents are now experiencing days of downpours, with increasingly severe floods.

Flooding hits Lagos

The heavy rain on Wednesday, June 3, flooded the Iyana-Oworo and Olopo Meji areas, causing long traffic and making access to the Third Mainland Bridge difficult.

However, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources in Lagos, Honourable Tokunbo Wahab, assured Lagosians that the flood would go away in about one to two hours.

This was stated in the early hours of Wednesday, June 3, on his Twitter page.

The statement read, “The Olopo Meji inward 3rd Mainland situation is a flash flood that is due to the high intensity of the rain, long duration rain coupled with high tidal lagoon level at the moment. Be rest assured it would go away in about 1-2hour. As the high tidal level of the lagoon goes down, the rain / storm water will be able to discharge into the lagoon.”

Recall that in February 2024, over 150 houses were submerged in floods following excessive rainfall, including bridges.

Officials of the Fire Service, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Police were seen rescuing individuals trapped in areas of the Alimosho Local Government Area of the state.

Netizens have taken to social media to share images and videos of the flooded areas, expressing their frustration with the situation.
