The local wing of Murtala Muhammed International Airport experienced significant disruptions on Friday as members of the Lagos chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) departed for Abuja ahead of the party’s highly anticipated National Convention.

Scheduled to take place on Friday, 27 March, and Saturday, 28 March 2026, at Eagle Square, the convention is expected to host more than 8,000 delegates, including President Bola Tinubu and members of his cabinet.

APC delegates from Lagos began arriving at the airport as early as 6:00 a.m., many dressed in coordinated Ankara attire, signalling unity and party solidarity ahead of the national gathering. The colourful arrivals caused noticeable congestion at the terminal, prompting airport officials to manage the large crowds and ensure smooth processing.

Prominent figures among the Lagos delegation included former Senate Minority Whip and Governance Advisory Council (GAC) member, Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon, former Deputy Governor of Lagos State and elder statesman, GAC member Prince Abiodun Ogunleye, alongside several other notable party leaders.

The delegation’s early mobilisation reflects the high stakes of the National Convention, which will determine internal party matters, reinforce regional alliances, and set the tone for APC’s strategies ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Observers noted that the coordinated display of party colours and the presence of senior leaders underscored Lagos State’s influential role within the APC, highlighting the state’s continued importance in shaping party decisions at both zonal and national levels.

With thousands of delegates converging in the Federal Capital Territory over the next 48 hours, airport authorities and convention organisers are expected to manage logistical challenges to ensure a smooth assembly for what is considered one of the most significant political events in Nigeria this year.
