- The Federal Government has confirmed plans to replace the NYSC's traditional khaki uniform with Adire as part of a major overhaul of the scheme
- Youth Development Minister Ayodele Olawande said the move is aimed at promoting local manufacturing and keeping government spending within Nigeria
- Nigerians have flooded X with mixed reactions, with many questioning the Adire proposal and arguing that corps members' welfare and security deserve greater attention
The Federal Government says NYSC's iconic khaki uniform could soon become history, but many Nigerians online aren't buying the idea.
The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has confirmed that one of the reforms approved for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) will replace the scheme's traditional khaki uniform with Adire fabric.
Speaking on Channels Television's The Morning Brief on Thursday, July 2, Olawande said the move is designed to promote local manufacturing and keep government spending within the Nigerian economy.
Responding to questions about whether the new uniforms would be produced locally, the minister said:
"It's Adire. So, Adire is being produced in Nigeria. We have them in Ogun, we have them in Kwara, we have textile industry. Let's put our money back into the country."
But the proposed uniform isn't the only change on the table.
Olawande said the ongoing restructuring of the NYSC will also see corps members posted according to their areas of specialisation. That means graduates with education-related qualifications would be deployed to schools instead of the current system, where postings often have little connection to a corps member's academic background.
According to him, the posting process would begin from orientation camp, creating a clearer framework for where corps members eventually serve.
The minister also addressed security concerns surrounding deployments. He said the government is considering posting prospective corps members to regions where they studied or are already familiar with, especially in areas facing security challenges.
The idea, he explained, is to reduce anxiety among parents and prospective corps members while making deployments more practical. Those who still wish to serve in other regions, including the North-East, would be free to indicate their interest.
Olawande also dismissed reports claiming the military would be removed from the NYSC scheme.
According to him, the reports were based on a misunderstanding. While the NYSC's operational leadership will now be headed by a civilian, the military will continue providing security support for corps members across the country.
Nigerians react to khaki replacement plan
The announcement has sparked heated conversations across X, with many Nigerians questioning whether replacing the NYSC khaki uniform should be a government priority.
While a few users saw the move as an attempt to promote local production, most reactions focused on concerns about national unity, the symbolism of Adire, government spending, and what many described as more pressing issues affecting corps members and the country.
@kyrianCK1: “Nigeria will never be great by promoting a particular ethnic in a state we have hundreds of ethnicities.this is Yoruba associated fabrics and shouldn’t serve as a national symbol. NYSC uniform should be a neutral uniform that serves and promotes interest of all not just a people.”
@segpumpin: “Thank God these idiots are not the only smokers or druggies in the world that are in power hence one would have attributed their idiocy to drugs.
An adirẹ uniform for a national programme?”
@uncle_shugar: “They should just put the right facility in place for growth and development of corp members.
Uniform doesn’t define value.”
@Ismaeeelmuhd: “I get the logic, but this is dumb. Why not create textile factories so that the materials can be made in Nigeria. The adire material is still imported, they only dye it in Nigeria.”
@Emmyfloxy23: “Na lace they suppose use..make everybody day wear aso ebi as uniform.
This government is something else,
He just day change everything first was the national anthem now is the NYSC khaki....na waytinz unna vote for be this 9ja government sha 🤣🤣🤣🤣”
@adebanjs_rsb: “Is this the next thing to do in Nigeria? 😂
Our leaders are comedians.”
@omoaladee1: “Tell me one thing these guys are not fighting? Very unpatriotic people.”
@chiynonso: “It's funny how these people think the uniform is the real issue”
@mrhyfi: “Why not Aso Oke 😃”
@Oparaukwu: “This will be worse.
Why replace khaki with wax?
So that corp members will be sowing new clothes every Eke day?
This is why handing over government to a man that never went to university not to talk of serving is useless. He doesn't have the experience.”
@iamprapheal: “This people are just dumb... how will you pick adire as uniform?
I conclude, this guy's in power like social media noise and distraction daily. They love making headlines...
Cos, what'd this rubbish?”
@the_drterry: “The Current NYSC Khaki is neutral hence shows more unity but changing it into a particular cultural attire defeats the purpose of unity and neutrality.
If they insist then everyone should just wear their cultural attire during Youth Service since you all want turn it into a Yoruba cultural activity.”
@CardinalStation: “They changed the identity of the country when they changed our National Anthem against the wishes of Nigerians. Now they’re about to change the identity of NYSC just to pave way for massive looting and bloated contracts in uniform production. Tinubu and APC supporters are the evil and criminals fashioned against Nigerians.”
@MobiThomas: “Things fall apart
What an animal kingdom.
They should kuku divide the country so that they will have all the time and privileges to do their YORUBA THING.”
@lewis_iyaogeh: “This failed APC doesn't think before they act. Just because they want to give Adire contract to one APC woman leader, they are about make a major costly mistake.”
@I_Am_Dahvy: “After you don do cultural dance for primary school finish, NYSC go still turn you to cultural mugu 🤣💀”
@balogunoluwasey: “Trillions of Naira is about to be awarded and looted for Adiire contract.”
@vickiejhay01: “I think this whole idea is going against the very reason that NYSC was created in the first place. Boda Ayo think this through.”
NYSC issues strict name warning ahead of 2026 batch ‘A’ stream II camp
Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) had issued a fresh warning to Prospective Corps Members (PCMs) ahead of the 2026 Batch ‘A’ Stream II orientation course, stressing that discrepancies in names could prevent registration at camp.
The scheme emphasised that all PCMs must ensure that their names match exactly across all documents, including certificates and the NYSC portal.
According to the statement, even minor inconsistencies such as spelling variations, rearranged names, missing middle names, or additional initials will not be accepted during camp registration.
