Monday Okpebholo has been sworn in as the governor of Edo State, having won against Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the September gubernatorial election.
The event took place on Tuesday, November 12 at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, the state capital, two months following the All Progressives Congress (APC)'s victory.
Okpebholo swears to serve Edo citizens faithfully
“Let me start by thanking God for His grace and incredible blessings. Democracy has triumphed again in our dear state,” Okpebholo stated during his inaugural address.
The governor further said, “For me, this is a humbling moment made possible by you all,” adding, “Today, you have officially given me the mandate to preside over our dear state as governor for the next four years. We will not betray this confidence you have reposed in me and the deputy governor Rt Hon. Dennis Idahosa. The welfare of our citizens is a top priority to us,” Okpebholo stated.
Okpebholo, Idahosa take oath of office
Okpebholo was sworn in alongside his running mate, Dennis Idahosa, at around 12:55 pm, and then rode in an open van around the stadium, waving to cheering supporters.
In his inaugural address, Okpebholo acknowledged the people of Edo State for their support, describing his election as a resounding victory for democracy.
He pledged to enhance the state's security, improve road connectivity between communities, and support small businesses to drive economic growth.
PDP accuses APC Okpebholo of winning by stolen mandate
Okpebholo's victory marked the end of Godwin Obaseki's eight-year rule in Edo State, as the PDP, despite Obaseki's support, lost its hold on power to the APC.
However, the PDP contested the outcome, alleging that its mandate was stolen, and vowed to challenge Okpebholo’s victory, claiming it did not reflect the will of the people.
The ceremony was graced by several dignitaries, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Tinubu, former Edo Governor Adams Oshiomhole, APC governors, and the Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo among others.
