Monday Okpebholo has been sworn in as the governor of Edo State, having won against Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the September gubernatorial election.

“Let me start by thanking God for His grace and incredible blessings. Democracy has triumphed again in our dear state,” Okpebholo stated during his inaugural address.

The governor further said, “For me, this is a humbling moment made possible by you all,” adding, “Today, you have officially given me the mandate to preside over our dear state as governor for the next four years. PDP accuses APC Okpebholo of winning by stolen mandate

Okpebholo's victory marked the end of Godwin Obaseki's eight-year rule in Edo State, as the PDP, despite Obaseki's support, lost its hold on power to the APC.

However,   the PDP contested the outcome, alleging that its mandate was stolen, and vowed to challenge Okpebholo’s victory, claiming it did not reflect the will of the people.

The ceremony was graced by several dignitaries, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Tinubu, former Edo Governor Adams Oshiomhole, APC governors, and the Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo among others.
