As part of our ongoing Know Your Lawmakers series, we take a closer look at the senators representing Kaduna State in the National Assembly for the 2023-2027 period.
Located in the northwest of Nigeria, Kaduna State, often referred to as “The Centre of Learning,” is a key industrial hub, with its capital city, Kaduna, being the largest textile manufacturing centre in the country.
Zaria, another prominent city in the state, also contributes to the region's economy by processing tobacco, cotton seeds, and producing textiles, bicycles, and printed materials.
As Kaduna continues to develop, the senators play an important role in advocating for the state's needs, addressing constituent concerns, and influencing policies that support both economic growth and social advancement.
Below are profiles of the three senators currently representing Kaduna in the 10th National Assembly:
1. Sunday Marshall Katung (South Senatorial District)
Sunday Marshall Katung has been serving as the Senator for the Kaduna South Senatorial District since June 2023.
Affiliated with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Katung has been active in Nigerian politics, securing both a seat in the House of Representatives and later winning the Senate seat for Kaduna South in 2023.
Prior to his current role, Katung represented the Jaba/Zangon Kataf Federal Constituency of Kaduna State in the House of Representatives from June 2015 to June 2019.
In addition to his legislative work, Katung served as Commissioner for Water Resources and Finance in Kaduna State. He also held the position of Company Secretary/Legal Adviser at Nigeria Reinsurance Corporation.
As part of his effort, he called for increased efforts to address climate change challenges in Africa and the Caribbean.
“These necessitate a collective call to action beyond the rhetoric of oratory. Many African and Caribbean countries are currently at risk of not meeting the SDGs by 2030, thus the imperative and urgency to rally around Goal 17: Partnership for the Goals.
“To effectively tackle multidimensional poverty, environmental degradation, sustainable development as well as resilient societies, we must adopt a multi-stakeholder approach that engages all sectors of society.”
2. Mustapha Ibrahim Khalid (North senatorial district)
Ibrahim Khalid Mustapha, a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), assumed office as the Senator for Kaduna North Senatorial District on May 29, 2023.
He secured the position in the 2023 Nigerian general election, defeating his opponent, Sulaiman Abdu Kwari.
Before his election to the Senate, Mustapha served as a member of the House of Representatives, representing Soba Federal Constituency from 2007 to 2015 during the 6th and 7th Assemblies.
As a senator, Mustapha continues to focus on representing the interests of his constituents in Kaduna North, working towards their progress and the overall development of the nation.
