Senators in Nigeria’s National Assembly serve as key representatives of their states, tasked with responsibilities that impact both their local constituencies and the entire nation.
Adamawa State, located in Nigeria's northeastern region, is represented by three senators representing the state's senatorial districts and they are responsible for lawmaking as well as advocating for the needs and concerns of their constituents.
Created on 27 August 1991 from the former Gongola State, the state is bordered by Borno to the northwest, Gombe to the west, Taraba to the southwest, and shares an international boundary with Cameroon to the east.
Also known as the "Land of Beauty," the Adamawa state’s capital, Yola, serves as a hub of political, economic, and cultural activities.
Here's a look at the three lawmakers from the state:
1. Senator Aminu Iya Abbas – Adamawa Central
Senator Aminu Iya Abbas, a 50-year-old member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), is the representative for Adamawa Central.
Abbas began his political journey in 2011 when he was elected to the Adamawa State House of Assembly for the Uba/Gaya constituency.
Despite losing in 2015, he returned to office in 2019, eventually serving as the Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly from 2019 to 2023.
In 2023, Abbas moved to the national level by securing the Senate seat for Adamawa Central.
2. Senator Amos Yohanna – Adamawa North
Reverend Amos Yohanna, 63, represents Adamawa North in the Senate after taking over from Elisha Abbo.
Yohanna, also of the PDP, was sworn in following a Court of Appeal decision on October 16, 2023, which invalidated Abbo's election victory.
The court directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue a certificate of return to Yohanna as the duly elected senator.
3. Senator Binos Dauda Yaroe – Adamawa South
Senator Binos Dauda Yaroe, 69, has been representing Adamawa South in the Senate since June 11, 2019. A member of the PDP, Yaroe won his seat after a successful campaign in 2018.
Yaroe has taken on leadership roles, including serving as Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Capital Market. He is also involved in other key committees.
Yaroe's legislative priorities include healthcare improvement, rural development, and youth empowerment.
