The Kano State Government has provided clarification on the recent Court of Appeal judgment regarding the emirship dispute, addressing what it described as misinterpretations and speculative reports circulating in the media.

In a statement issued on Saturday, March 15, the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law while ensuring the public remains informed about the legal proceedings.

Speaking at a press briefing at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Kano, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Dederi, explained that the Court of Appeal, in its judgment delivered on January 10, 2025, upheld the repeal of the Kano Emirate Council Law, 2019.

The ruling effectively overturned an earlier judgment by the Federal High Court in Kano.

Dederi further clarified that despite this ruling, Alhaji Aminu Dan’agundi, who was dissatisfied with the verdict, has since taken the matter to the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

He emphasised that the Court of Appeal’s judgment remains valid and binding unless the Supreme Court decides otherwise.

Regarding the recent stay of execution granted by the Court of Appeal, Dederi described it as a procedural legal step intended to maintain the status quo while the case is being reviewed at the apex court.

“The Kano State Government urges the public to remain calm, law-abiding, and avoid any form of provocation,” the statement read.

He further assured that the government is closely monitoring developments in the case and has instructed its legal team to thoroughly study the outcome of the Court of Appeal proceedings in order to determine the next course of action in line with the law.

Dederi also took the opportunity to acknowledge the patience and resilience of Kano State residents amid the ongoing legal battle.

“The government has also instructed its legal team to study the outcome of the proceedings and determine the next steps in line with the law,” he reiterated.

On behalf of the governor, the Attorney General expressed deep appreciation to the people of Kano for their patience, understanding, and unwavering prayers for peace and progress in both the state and the country.

Drama as court dethrones Ado Bayero, affirms Sanusi’s reinstatement

Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that the Court ordered Aminu Ado-Bayero and four other former Emirs to quickly return all Emirate Traditional Royal Artefacts to the government and the substantive Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

The judgment, which was delivered on Monday, July 15 by Justice Amina Aliyu of the Kano State High Court prohibits the 15th Emir of Kano and four other former Emirs of Bichi, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye, along with their servants, associates, and anyone appointed by them, from representing themselves as Emirs of Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano, and Karaye.
