Former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar (retd.), has formally announced his withdrawal from active politics, bringing an end to growing speculation surrounding his potential return to the political scene ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Abubakar made the announcement in a statement shared via his X handle on Sunday, where he declared that he no longer belongs to any political party and would not seek any elective office in the future.

The retired Air Marshal, who served as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bauchi State during the 2023 elections, stated that his decision was taken after careful reflection on his personal aspirations and commitment to national service.

According to him, although he is stepping away from partisan politics, he remains committed to contributing to the growth and development of Nigeria as a private citizen.

“I am no longer affiliated with any political party and I will not contest for any political office,” Abubakar stated, while expressing appreciation to supporters and associates who stood by him during his political journey.

The announcement comes at a time when political activities ahead of the 2027 elections are gradually gaining momentum across the country. In recent weeks, campaign posters allegedly promoting Abubakar for another governorship bid had surfaced in several parts of Bauchi State, sparking widespread speculation regarding his political ambitions.

However, his latest declaration appears to have put an end to those rumours.

Abubakar retired from the Nigerian Air Force in 2021 after an extensive military career that saw him rise to the position of Chief of Air Staff. During his tenure, he was widely recognised for overseeing key operational reforms and strengthening the Air Force’s counter-insurgency operations across different parts of the country.

Following his retirement from military service, he ventured into partisan politics and emerged as the APC governorship candidate in Bauchi State for the 2023 general election. Despite a vigorous campaign, he lost the election to the incumbent governor, Bala Mohammed of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Political observers in Bauchi State have described his withdrawal as a significant development, particularly given his influence within sections of the APC and among former military associates.

Some analysts believe his decision may alter political calculations within the opposition party ahead of future elections, while others view it as an indication of growing dissatisfaction among certain political actors regarding the current state of partisan politics in the country.

Meanwhile, supporters of the former Air Chief have continued to commend his service both in the military and in public life, describing him as a disciplined leader with a strong commitment to national unity and development.

Although Abubakar may be stepping away from electoral politics, many believe his voice and experience will continue to carry weight in national discussions and public affairs in the years ahead.
