Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, paid a courtesy visit to former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Tuesday night, in what is seen as a significant political development ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting took place shortly after Obi was cleared by the screening committee of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as a presidential aspirant ahead of the party’s primary.

In a post shared on his official X handle on Wednesday, Kwankwaso confirmed the visit, noting that Obi came to his Maitama residence in Abuja. He described the former Labour Party presidential candidate as a “brother” and expressed optimism about the future of the party.

“Last night, I received a courtesy visit from my brother, His Excellency Peter Obi, shortly after his successful screening as the presidential aspirant of our party, the NDC. The future is bright and full of promise,” Kwankwaso wrote.

The visit has further fuelled speculation about a possible political alliance between the two former governors, both of whom contested the 2023 presidential election on different platforms but have since aligned under the NDC ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Political observers view the development as part of a wider realignment within Nigeria’s opposition landscape, as key political figures reposition themselves ahead of 2027.

Obi and Kwankwaso were recently reported to have joined the NDC in early May 2026 after exiting the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a move that has continued to generate reactions across the political space.

The NDC screening committee reportedly cleared Obi unopposed, after he emerged as the only aspirant to purchase the party’s presidential nomination form. The development has further strengthened his position within the party structure ahead of the primaries.

The meeting between both leaders also comes amid ongoing discussions about forming a stronger opposition coalition capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

In photographs shared from the visit, Obi and Kwankwaso were seen seated together in a relaxed setting, appearing to engage in cordial discussions.

While neither of the politicians has officially confirmed any running mate arrangement, the growing frequency of meetings between them has continued to fuel speculation about a possible joint ticket or strategic partnership in the forthcoming elections.
