  • The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye apologised for saying that Christians who don’t pay tithe won’t make heaven
  • He said only beginners pay 10 per cent, and added that some people should pay 20, 30, or 40 per cent
  • Nigerians reacted, some advised Christians to read their Bibles so that they would not be deceived. Others believe he is wrong for asking people to pay more than 10 per cent

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has apologised for saying that Christians who don’t pay tithe will not make heaven.

Adeboye, who had earlier told his followers and congregation that anyone who doesn’t pay his/her tithe is not going to heaven, apologised to them saying he was wrong to have said that.

In a viral video posted by the church’s young adults and youths affairs account @rccgyayaglobal, Adeboye said the Bible did not say Christians who don’t pay tithe will not go to heaven.

According to him, “I want to apologise for making a mistake. For saying that if you don’t pay tithe, you might not make it to heaven. Sorry, that’s wrong. That is not in the Bible. What the Bible says is ‘Be at peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see God.

“Now, let me tell you, it is possible to be right and wrong at the same time. I will prove it to you. I am a scientist, I know that. It is wrong to limit you to 10 per cent. At a time some of you should be paying 20, 30, or 40 per cent. 10 per cent should be for beginners. Giving should be violently.”

Nigerians react to Adeboye’s apology

Many Nigerians believe that pastors should not be followed blindly and that Christians should study their Bibles and know God for themselves. A few people accepted his apology but others pointed out that he was asking for more tithe and going against the 10 per cent the Bible directed.

Here are some of the comments:

@seunosewa  posted: “I want to congratulate everyone who dragged Pastor Adeboye for his unbiblical, cynical, & greedy teaching that you must pay tithes to make heaven.

That it took so long for him to repent suggests that he doesn't have a close relationship with the Holy Spirit. Think about it. 🤔”

@Stanisl56017438 posted: “Touch not my anointed and do my prophet no harm. My question is what becomes of you folks that has been defending this man. He knows what he has been doing but never knew Abel would emerge to expose him like this.”

@MrBig_Bone posted: “It gets easier when you realize your pastors are really still just men. And no man is perfect. This realization would help you focus on what matters.”

@i_am_slimzie posted: “Read your Bible and protect yourself from these men who call themselves pastors.”

@KCDozzyBenjamin posted: “Apologises for being wrong. States what the Bible actually said. Goes ahead to ask for more than the is stated!”

@The_Exodus_B posted: ““I apologized but now, bring 30% to 40%” Is it in the Bible? No! But let’s talk about Format’s principle 😂😂😂😂 May god not enlighten the unwise, so that the wise may continue to use them.”

@AdepojuWilliam4 posted: “This is a sign for you to know God and understand His Word by yourself as always being preached. Don't go to church because of your Pastor. Pastors are humans too. Paying Tithe is a personal relationship between you and God just as fasting is. It is voluntary.”

@Akpotin1 posted: “This man is not apologizing. You can't be apologizing for saying people cannot make heaven without paying tithes, then go on to say "it is wrong to limit you to 10% when some of you could do 20%, 50%, ... Giving should be VIOLENTLY!". This is an unrepentant religious thief!”

@UnkleAyo posted: “Two Factor Authentication. Lead it with an apology, then wrap it up with an emotionally manipulative rabble dazzle to not lose that stream of income. Initially without the apology = 10% After the apology = 20%, 30%, 40%, violently 🤭 AGBA 🧎🙌 LET SOMEBODY SHOUT HALLELUUUYA!”

@unclechoice posted: “It’s better to give the 100% and go hungrý so you can make heaven in few days from now.”

@activeplayboi posted: “lol 😂 I like this baba, make I collect 200k, remove 80k 40%, when I wun pay house rent 100k, debt 50k. Babe talk say nah inside bible 10% day. Ar don hear una oooo.”

@Onyenazumu posted: “Most people didn't even watch the video. I think he even doubled down by saying "10% is too small" and that giving should be "violently"😂😂😂.

So is this one apology 😂😂😂”

@abdullahiajao1 posted: “Apology accepted, sir, but you already know that Jesus Christ "Yesua" (Peace be upon Him)   did not collect tithes, and neither did Paul of the Apostles. We must follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ "Yesua" (Peace be upon Him)”

“Time for him to retire”: Nigerians criticise Pastor Adeboye for “spiritual solution” comment

Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, (RCCG),  Pastor Enoch Adeboye, came under fire on social media for saying Nigeria needs a spiritual solution to its problems.

In a video circulating on social media, Adeboye said Nigerian leaders are doing everything in their power to solve the problems of the country but according to him, Nigeria’s problems require divine intervention as the problems are more spiritual than political.
