- Aminu Waziri Tambuwal withdrew from the 2027 Sokoto South Senatorial race
- The former governor transferred the ADC senatorial ticket to Faruk Malami-Yabo
- ADC spokesperson Lamir Aminu said Tambuwal stepped aside to preserve unity, peace and internal democracy
Former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has withdrawn from the 2027 Sokoto South Senatorial contest and handed the African Democratic Congress ticket to former Commissioner for Finance, Faruk Malami-Yabo.
Tambuwal, who is widely regarded as the leader of the African Democratic Congress in Sokoto State, reportedly stepped aside after a series of consultations and disagreements over the party’s candidate selection process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Confirming the development on Friday, May 15, the Sokoto State Publicity Secretary of the ADC, Lamir Aminu, said the former governor sacrificed his ambition to maintain peace and unity within the party.
According to him, “Senator Tambuwal decided to relinquish the ticket to promote harmony and strengthen internal democracy in the party.”
He added that the ADC leadership in Sokoto was focused on creating opportunities for younger politicians to emerge in future elections.
“The ADC leadership in Sokoto is committed to giving younger politicians the opportunity to contest positions,” he said, noting that several House of Representatives tickets in the state had also been handed to younger candidates.
The decision comes amid increasing political realignments within the ADC ahead of the 2027 elections scheduled for February 20, 2027.
Meanwhile, ADC chieftain Faruku Umar Fada has emerged as the party’s candidate for the Sokoto North/Sokoto South Federal Constituency.
His emergence was announced on Friday, May 15, as political activities intensified across the state ahead of the polls.
Party supporters described Fada as a grassroots politician with growing support across the constituency.
Reacting after securing the ticket, Fada thanked party leaders and supporters for their confidence in him, pledging to run an inclusive campaign centred on youth empowerment, education and effective representation.
“My focus would be on effective representation, youth empowerment, education, and addressing challenges affecting constituents in Sokoto North and Sokoto South,” he said.
He also expressed confidence in the party’s chances, saying, “With the total support of every stakeholder in this party, we will get there.”
PDP remains strong in Sokoto despite defections, says former senator Gada
Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that a former senator who represented Sokoto East Senatorial District, Abubakar Umar Gada, had reassured members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that the party remains stable and influential in Sokoto State despite recent political defections.
The former senator called on party members and supporters to stay calm and remain committed to the party’s principles, noting that the party’s political structure and electoral strength in the state remain solid.
