Romantic relationshipFrom Heartbreak to Healing: Coping with breakups

Breakups can be a wild ride. When a relationship crashes and burns, emotions run the gamut from tears and tantrums to high-fives and hallelujahs.

Recently, a thread on X (formerly Twitter) got everyone talking about how they bounced back from splitsville. The responses are as unique as the people sharing them, showing just how many ways we handle heartbreak.

For some, breakups mean diving into new hobbies or hitting the gym, while others lean on friends and family for support.

Many use this time to rediscover themselves and grow. But the thread on X also highlighted some truly unexpected and quirky ways folks have dealt with their breakups.

@Alimi_9 shares a moment of unexpected emotional vulnerability. During a friend’s party, she received the breakup message just as the celebrant was giving a speech. The sudden wave of emotion led her to tears, confusing everyone around who thought she was moved by the speech rather than her personal heartbreak. This tweet humorously encapsulates the awkwardness and timing that often accompany breakups.

@kasoette took a unique approach by seeking comfort from her sister’s goats. She sat with the goats, pouring out her feelings and asking if they had ever felt pain. The goats’ attentive silence provided an unexpected but comforting audience. Once she finished, they resumed their chewing, and she thanked them for listening.

@DamilolaKawojue shared a particularly intense response to a breakup. In a state of distress, he found himself trekking a considerable distance without clear memory of the journey. Additionally, he tried to numb the pain with 24mg of Lexotan, only to sleep for 15 hours and wake up feeling normal. This tweet showcases the lengths to which people might go to escape the immediate pain of heartbreak.

Other coping attempts at breakup:

@HeyYoyo_: “My friend came to my house to show me something about an ex cause she didn’t want me finding out online esp when she wasn’t w/ me. I shrugged it off as nah,it’s calm & I was unbothered. I was walking her to her car when I suddenly sat on the floor of my estate & started weeping.”

@Cessbaby7: “Visited him unannounced, it was raining heavily and he didn't allow me in. I was already sobbing and begging him then he left me in the rain and closed his door.”

@kemikalex: “Remained single for 8 years.”

@Official_Twin2: “I was indoor for two weeks without speaking to anyone, my mom thought i was possessed by evil Jinn.”

@Joe_Manie: “Jogged for four hours without stopping or taking a break.”

@Ola_Ope: “Cried in the presence of my friends & her. She talk say even if I cried from now till kingdom come, it won't change anything. Catarrh dey come out of my nose 🤣🤣”

Bottomline

Breakups, while painful, can also be a catalyst for personal growth and new beginnings.

The stories shared on X highlight the resilience and creativity people exhibit when faced with emotional challenges.

Whether it's through art, travel, fitness, or simply indulging in some comfort food and TV, doing the unbelievable, acting crazily, everyone has their unique way of healing.

Ultimately, these varied responses remind us that there is no right or wrong way to move on from a breakup—it's all about finding what works best for you.
