  • Simple habits like regular handwashing, daily bathing, proper oral care and wearing clean clothes can significantly improve your health
  • Practising good hygiene consistently is one of the easiest and most effective ways to live a healthier, more confident life

Personal hygiene is often associated with looking neat and smelling fresh, but it's much more than that. Good hygiene plays a vital role in preventing illness, boosting confidence and protecting the people around you.

From your hands to your toothbrush, the small habits you practise every day can make a big difference to your overall health. The good news is that maintaining good hygiene doesn't require expensive products—just consistency.

Here are eight simple personal hygiene habits everyone should make part of their daily routine.

1. Wash your hands properly, regularly

Your hands come into contact with countless surfaces throughout the day, picking up germs that can easily spread to your mouth, nose or eyes.

Wash your hands with soap and clean water before eating, after using the toilet, after coughing or sneezing, and whenever they become visibly dirty. Proper handwashing is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent the spread of infections.

2. Bathe every day

Daily bathing helps remove sweat, dirt, bacteria and excess oil from your skin.

In Nigeria's warm climate, regular bathing is especially important to stay fresh and reduce body odour. Pay attention to areas where sweat tends to accumulate, such as the underarms, feet and groin.

Wearing clean clothes after bathing also helps maintain good hygiene.

3. Take care of your teeth

Your oral health is closely linked to your overall health.

Brush your teeth at least twice a day using fluoride toothpaste, and don't forget to clean your tongue, where bacteria can also accumulate. Replacing your toothbrush every three to four months—or sooner if the bristles become worn—can help maintain effective cleaning.

Regular dental check-ups are also important, even if you aren't experiencing pain.

4. Keep your nails clean, trimmed

Long or dirty fingernails can trap germs, dirt and bacteria.

Trim your nails regularly and clean underneath them, especially before preparing food or eating. Avoid biting your nails, as this can transfer germs from your hands into your mouth.

Well-maintained nails aren't just about appearance—they're also a matter of health.

5. Wear clean clothes

Even after a shower, wearing dirty clothes can reintroduce sweat, bacteria and unpleasant odours.

Change your underwear and socks daily, and wash clothes regularly, particularly those worn during exercise or in hot weather. Clean clothing helps protect your skin and keeps you feeling comfortable throughout the day.

6. Practise good food hygiene

Personal hygiene extends to the way you handle food.

Wash fruits and vegetables before eating them, keep cooking surfaces clean and ensure food is properly cooked and stored. Drinking clean, safe water is equally important in preventing foodborne illnesses.

Safe food practices help protect both you and your family.

7. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing

Respiratory illnesses can spread through droplets released when people cough or sneeze.

Use a tissue or the inside of your elbow—not your hands—to cover your mouth and nose. Dispose of used tissues properly and wash your hands afterwards.

This simple habit helps reduce the spread of germs in schools, workplaces and public spaces.

8. Don't ignore your personal items

Items like towels, combs, razors, toothbrushes and face cloths should be kept clean and, where possible, not shared with others.

Sharing personal hygiene items can increase the risk of spreading infections, including certain skin conditions and oral diseases.

Keeping these items clean and for your personal use only is a small habit with significant health benefits.
