  • Growing up in Nigeria still lingers nostalgic feelings especially for people born in the early 90s
  • From Suwe, and TenTen, to Boju Boju, break periods at school were always exciting moments to play one of these Nigerian-inspired games. 
  • Reminiscing the past moments, TheRadar curated 15 classic Nigerian games played by 90s kids 

Back in the days, growing up as a child came with no worries. You just go to school and the next is to play our favourite games with friends. 

The most interesting part of these games is how it required no internet or technology, there were local games that built friendships and teamwork. 

The popular phrase “Adulthood na scam” might not be far-fetched with many challenges that adulthood brings, compared to when one was just a child. 

In today’s world where technology reigns supreme, TheRadar compiled a list of 15 Nigerian games kids played in the 90s. This is to remind us of the simple joy that shaped our childhood. The tradition, culture and unbreakable spirit of playfulness that comes with it as well. 

  • Tinko Tinko

This game was famous among girls. It involves two people clapping and slamming their hands in a rhythmic pattern as they sing along.  

  • Boju Boju

Boju Boju is a Yoruba phrase that translates to hide and seek. This game was exciting and suspense-filled. A player covers his eyes and counts to a certain number. After the last count, he opens his eyes and must find where everyone is hiding. 

  • Ten Ten 

Also common among girls, the players move their legs in a rhythm, clapping their hands. The rules of the game states that both players must not raise their legs in the same direction. 

  • After Round One

This nostalgic game starts with the theme song, “After round one, original panadol extra, o tun gbe De.” Before that, every player is expected to pick a number. As the game begins, players show their fingers depicting numbers, anyone whose number is mentioned after counting all players wins, the last person is the loser. 

  • Tyre Race

Tyre race has children running in the street in a race. They have to cycle an old and worn-out tyre and who ever gets to the finish line, wins the race.
