Renowned Nollywood director Dimeji Ajibola, who is notable for his directorial and editing roles in the 2023 thriller film Shanty Town is dead.
Ajibola’s death comes four days after the recent demise of Nollywood's oldest and veteran actor, Charles Oluomo, popularly known as Agbako, on October 31 at 101 years.
The popular director, who is also known for his direction on Slum King, is said to have battled with an undisclosed ailment prior to his sudden death.
Via an Instagram post on Sunday, November 3, his colleagues, actor Bolanle Ninalowo, director Samuel Olatunji and Shanty Town Producer Chineye Nworah broke the news of Ajibola's death on their social media pages and expressed their condolences.
“Good night, My brother Dimeji Ajibola. Dimeji, I don’t know what to write.” Nworah wrote.”
“I love you my brother and I miss you, Dimeji Ajibola. May God heal your family and loved ones. Till we meet again, Didi dox. Rest on the champ.” Ninalowo shared his condolences.
“Dimeji Ajibola was my client and friend. So sad to hear this news. Rest in peace to a great guy! Sad Sunday as the director of Shanty Town passed away.” Olatunji added his condolences.
Dimeji Ajibola’s career in film and Advertising
Prior to his death, Dimeji Ajibola demonstrated his prowess as a filmmaker and advertiser with a career that spanned 18 years. Ajibola was known for his exceptional brand promotion and content production for television, film, and advertising.
The director, who kicked off his career as an animator, directed visuals for popular Nollywood titles like Shanty Town, Slum King, Hoodrush, Ovy’s Voice, and Wura. Notably, he is also one of the creative force behind award-winning TV adverts, including the iconic MTN Yello animated ads and Coca-Cola TV commercials.
The late award-winning director, who was the CEO of Flipsyde Studios, was recognised for his 2012 film Hoodrush, which won laurels including Best Actor and Soundtrack at the Nollywood Movies Awards, Best Supporting Actor at the AMAA Awards, and Best Movie at the 2012 Green Me Film Festival in Germany.
Other films directed by Ajibola include a 2022 comedy film, Passport, and a 2020 Nigerian apocalyptic action film, Ratnik, among others.
