Veteran Nollywood actress Ayo Adesanya shared her harrowing experience of being in an abusive marriage during an emotional interview with journalist Chude Jideonwo.
Adesanya revealed the darker side of her marriage, which lasted for 10 years.
The Nollywood actress who has been in the spotlight in the movie industry alongside stars like Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, among others suddenly went down the radar. However, she revealed this was as a result of her wrong decision in choosing a partner.
Adesanya confessed that her marriage was marred by physical and emotional abuse. She struggled with depression, often turning to alcohol to cope with her emotions.
She stated, “ I was so depressed. I didn't know it was depression. I'll go to a corner and buy a bottle of brandy to drink because I wanted to be numb.”
She revealed the physical abuse and how her ex husband would pacify her afterwards. Her ex-husband's insecurity and overprotectiveness forced her to take a break from acting, controlling her interactions with marketers and managing her finances.
The actress recalled the tumultuous relationship, saying, "Anywhere my ex-husband saw me, he would beat me. When anyone calls for a movie gig, he'll tell them I am not available. It was that bad.”
The abuse took a toll on her mental and she felt trapped due to the shame of people judging her for not being able to keep a man, but she eventually found the courage to walk away after 10 years.
“The night I walked away was like magic. I left at midnight. Talking about it is a lot but I do have to talk about it.”
