  • NFVCB has declared that all content will now be subjected to inspection, including skits
  • The board then promised to make the inspection process easy
  • The board, however, condemns the promotion of same-sex content

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) of the Nigerian government has declared that all skits, music videos, and other video content must henceforth be categorized by the NFVCB before being made available to the general public.

This development was conveyed in an Instagram statement on Tuesday, June 25.

The statement read, “It is also an offence to distribute or exhibit any film or video content including skits and musical videos on any platform without recourse to the National Film and Video Censors Board for classification.”

All audiovisual contents are to be inspected

The NFVCB's executive director, Dr Shaibu Husseini, explained that this action puts Nigeria in line with international norms that classify information rather than ban it. Age ratings and content warnings are assigned as part of the categorization process to help viewers understand what is appropriate for certain age groups. All video content, including music videos and skits, is now subject to this initiative's inspection and rating process before being made available to the general public.

NFVCB promises to make the process easy

With this new law, the Nigerian film and video industry hopes to preserve a standard of appropriateness and quality while shielding viewers—especially children—from inappropriate content.

The NFVCB also promises to digitise the classification procedure to facilitate this. By enabling filmmakers and content creators to submit their work online, monitor the classification process, and obtain their certificates, the process will be simpler and more effective for them.

In addition, the NFVCB condemned the promotion and marketing of same-sex content on social media and reminded filmmakers and content producers that it is against the law in Nigeria to publicly showcase same-sex relationships.
