- South African singer Tyla recently won the Top Afrobeats Artist and Top Afrobeats Song categories at the Billboard Music Awards
- This is the second time she has won in the Afrobeats category
- Her victory has generated mixed reactions among netizens
Mixed reactions have followed South African singer and songwriter Tyla Seethal's (known as Tyla) victory at the just-concluded Billboard Music Awards.
The singer recently won two award categories, Top Afrobeats Song with her Water track and Top Afrobeats Artist.
This is not the first time the singer won an Afrobeats category. In September, Tyla won a similar award for Best Afrobeats with her chart-topping hit Water at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.
She was in the Best Afrobeats category alongside Burna Boy, Tems, Davido, Ayra Starr, Lojay, and Pheelz. However, during her award speech, she clarified that she wasn't an Afrobeats artiste.
Via an X (formerly Twitter) post, Album Talks revealed on Friday, December 13, that Tyla again defeated Nigerian Afrobeats singers Burna Boy, Asake, Rema, and Tems in the Top Afrobeats category at the Billboard Music Awards.
“Tyla won two awards at the Billboard Music Awards last night #BBMAs. Top Afrobeats Song (Water) and Top Afrobeats Artist. She fought off competition from Burna Boy, Asake, Rema & Tems for Top Afrobeats Artist,” it wrote.
