Netizens have pointed out how South African singer and songwriter Tyla Seethal, known as Tyla, did not recognise Nigerian singer Davido during her recent award speech.

Tyla recently won the category for Best Afrobeats at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards with the popular song ‘Water’ The feat made her the first African female to win the category.

Via a viral clip of her speech video on X (formerly Twitter) on September 12, she expressed her gratitude for winning the award and recognised Nigerian Afrobeats artistes representing the genre as well.

“The global impact that water has on the world just proves that African music can be pop music too. This is so special but also bittersweet because I know there is a tendency to group all African artistes under Afrobeats and it is a thing. Even though Afrobeats have run things and opened so many doors for us. African music is so diverse, it is more than just Afrobeats.

I am from South Africa and I represent Amapiano. I just want to shout out to all Afrobeats artistes in this category with me. Shout out Tems, Ayra Star, Shout out Lojay, shout out Rema, Wizkid, Burna Boy and yea, Love you guys. Africa to the world.” she said.
