  • Nigerian singer Korede Bello has opened up about his life after leaving Don Jazzy’s record label, Mavin
  • Korede disclosed that he drowned in the feeling of being only a product to make money
  • Netizens shared mixed feelings about his statement pointing out that he didn't have many hits while in Mavin Record

Speaking on his decision to leave Mavin Records, Nigerian singer Korede Bello has opened up on how he lost touch with himself as an artiste and felt like a product.

Korede, who is best known for his hit song, Godwin, got signed to Mavin Records, owned by Afrobeats producer Don Jazzy in 2014. Korede exited the record label in 2021.

In a recent YouTube interview with HipTV trending on Thursday, September 5, Korede spoke about what life after Mavin Records was for him.

“I think its just seasons. I was at the season of my life where I needed to metamorphose to explore my inner worlds, to do introspections and understand myself and understand me more. It was to reconnect to my why. This is because I was at the stage where I started to feel like a product.

I started to feel that something else was being sold. You know you lose sight of what matters when you chase after the next song, after the next big or whatever it is that can get you in the conversation. So, most artistes are addicted to that cycle.” the singer expressed.

28-year-old Korede Bello also touched on the topic of African music and how it has lost its essence in recent times.

According to him, artistes have started to lose the essence of the whole African music because African music is like a manual.

Go back to Sunny Ade and Fela then come to African China, Tuface and Daddy Showkey, they were still talking about how to live. How to live, how to deal with heartbreak, how to love, how to grow and all of that. These are things that people do and it is daily bread. We don't get a lot of that now. We are not telling stories as much, that is what I'm saying.” he explained.

Netizens react to Korede Bello’s recent statement

TheRadar curated some below:

@ulot_szn said, “Your role was to make money for them, ahbi what were you expecting. Record label is not a charity organisation, musicians signed are the products they are selling to make money. You people will just come to social media to be capping nonsense.”

@Ovoh_of_Lagos wrote, “God no win again?? Tinubu don humble my gee.”

@Yeahmicee asked, “What else were you there for? Decoration?”

@Dat_Oronboy said, “You signed a contract. Others are also looking for the opportunity, no come dey play pity card here.”

@savalake231 said, “How many money the werey make for Marvin se? Wetin make Reekado Banks go come talk? For Godwin and which other song nau? Werey dey disguise.”

@thebeeperfumery explained, “For those questioning his statement, this is what he meant; Korede wanted something more humane. He wanted a partnership. He acknowledged he’s a product of Mavin, yet he doesn’t want a stale, robotic, & somewhat complex record label. Mavin is not progressive. You’d get used to it.”

Album Review: “HEIS” is Rema’s monotonous outburst for recognition

Earlier, TheRadar reviewed Rema’s album. It solidified an evolution in the 24-year-old's artistic journey, but it signaled a monotonous outburst to seek recognition.

Considering the title of the album and its meaning, Rema, born Divine Ikubor, made a rather bold declaration of himself as “number one” in the music game - which is quite controversial.
