The 17th edition of The Headies Awards took place on Sunday, April 27, at the Landmark Events Centre in Lagos.
Renowned as Nigeria’s premier musical award show, the event, hosted by actress Nancy Isime, showcased diverse talents that reflect the evolution of African music.
The event, themed “Back to Base” and “Apologetically African,” honoured excellence in African music during the eligibility period from April 1, 2023, to July 31, 2024.
The 17th Headies ceremony featured memorable performances, including a soulful acoustic set by Fireboy DML and a surprise collaboration by Olamide and newcomer Shallipopi, a performance by Juma Jux, who won the East-Africa artiste of the year at the event.
A touching tribute to Afrobeats pioneers included appearances from veterans like 2Baba and Sound Sultan’s son.
Chike won two awards for his hit song Egwu, including the Viewers’ Choice Award and Best Music Video.
Another touching incident at the event occurred when the late Mohbad was honoured posthumously as the Best Street-Hop Artiste for Ask About Me, with a heartfelt tribute that moved many in attendance.
Rema secured Album of the Year for Heis, celebrated for its genre-blending innovation, and delivered a captivating performance that electrified the audience.
Other major winners included: Best Male Artiste: Asake; Best Female Artiste: Ayra Starr; Rookie of the Year: Odumodublvck; Best Collaboration: Tems for “Fountains” with Drake.
Funke Akindele's movie titled A Tribe Called Judah also won the category of ‘Soundtrack of the Year’ in the 17th Headies Awards held in Lagos on Sunday night.
The night also introduced the new Global Impact Award, recognising African artistes influencing the global music scene. Burna Boy virtually accepted this inaugural honour as the celebration reflected the growing international presence of Nigerian music.
In total, ten award categories were excluded from this year's ceremony, including Best Collaboration and Best Inspirational Single, as attention focused on the performances and achievers.
