- Afrobeats singer recently made a comment on Nigeria’s economy
- The remarks came as advice to Black Americans on why they should not relocate to Africa
- Davido’s remarks stirred controversial reactions from netizens and political personalities
Nigerian Afrobeats singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido has come under heavy criticism for advising black Americans against relocating to Nigeria.
The Unavailable crooner’s remark on the state of Africa and Nigeria’s economy also attracted the attention of Nigerian political personalities who criticised his stance.
Davido, while featuring on a recent edition of The Big Homies House podcast, urged Black Americans, particularly Nigerians, not to return home, due to the country’s economic crisis.
The 32-year-old singer reportedly said this based on speculations that some black Americans were considering leaving the United States (US) following the electoral victory of Donald Trump. Africans in America are said to be concerned about potential policies of Trump that may not favour them.
“Leave America and go where? Let's be honest, go back where? It's not cool back home. The economy now is in shambles. I do my part. I'm an ambassador. When I go home and I'm filming, I'm not going to show the bad parts. I go to the trenches but I'm talking about the situation in the country.
We Nigerians, like now the exchange rate is messed up and a lot of stuff is not going well. The economy is not just good. The oil prices are too high. Imagine a country that produces oil and we are paying more money for oil than a country that is importing. Regardless, entertainment is one of the things that has made Africa look good. We do not have the best leaders and that's a fact.” Davido expressed.
How political personalities reacted to Davido’s comment on Nigeria's economy
Following Davido’s recent comments, many political gladiators aside from netizens' reactions have asked Davido to retract his statements.
- Joe Igbokwe
A chieftain of All Progressive Congress (APC) Joe Igbokwe via his official Facebook page called out Davido and advised him to retract his statements with immediate effect.
“My Inlaw Davido has made me sad by telling the world in America that Nigeria's economy is in shambles. This is very sad. I will advise him to retract his statement asap. Nigeria made Davido,” he wrote.
- Bashir Ahmed
Similarly, a former aide to former President Muhammad Buhari, Bashir Ahmed, shared his disappointment in the Afrobeats singer.
“Selling out your country from foreign soil is so disappointing and unpatriotic. Public figures like Davido should know that. They should act and be seen as good ambassadors for Nigeria wherever they find themselves. @NOA_Nigeria!”
- Reno Omokri
Popular political analyst Reno Omokri also shared his thoughts on what Davido said, asking the singer to retract his comments. In a long post, the political analyst disagreed with Davido’s recent statement on Nigeria’s economy.
“Perhaps if Davido had built a track record of showing more commitment to Nigeria, he, like Wizkid, would have broken streaming records on Spotify Nigeria.
I urge Davido to learn from Rihanna, who never talks down on her country and instead uses her celebrity to promote Barbados and project her positively to the world.” he wrote partly.
