Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi has once again captivated the attention of music lovers worldwide with her latest appearance on the NPR Tiny Desk. There, she gave a memorable performance that further heightened the anticipation of her debut album.

The singer, fondly known as Tems, made another appearance on the Tiny Desk on June 3, 2024. Her first visit to "Tiny Desk" was when she debuted her EP If Orange Was a Place in 2021. Since then, she has exceeded expectations in terms of growth and has become one of the most popular music exports from Nigeria. She is regarded in some quarters as one of the biggest female African artistes at the moment.

After performing at home in 2021 to promote her sophomore EP, "If Orange Is A Place," Tems appeared on the Tiny Desk for the second time.

Buildup to Tems’ 'Born in the Wild' album release

As the world awaits the official release of Tems' debut album, Born in the Wild, she has whetted the appetite of her fans with an impressive performance at the NPR Tiny Desk. Some of the songs she performed include Me & You, Ice T, Unfortunate (unreleased), Forever (unreleased) and Love me JeJe.

Tems began her performance with a rendition of her single “Me & U," which was nominated for Best Gospel/Inspiration song at the 2024 BET Awards. She was assisted by a live band. She then performed “Ice T" from her first EP, “For Broken Ears," live. She sang "Unfortunate," an unreleased R&B song off her upcoming debut album "Born In The Wild.”

In addition, she debuted Forever, a song from her album that features jazz, rumba, and Cathy Funk components and gives fans a taste of what to expect from "Born In The Wild." Tems sang her most recent single, Love me JeJe, which is a cover of the traditional Nigerian song of the same name by Seyi Sodimu & Shaffy Bello.

When will Tems’ album be released?

It is anticipated that Born in the Wild, which contains 18 songs, will be released on June 7, 2024. The album features appearances from Nigerian musician Asake and American rapper J Cole, among others.

Meanwhile, Tems is one of nine Black female musicians who will be performing on the Tiny Desk Stage as part of NPR's Festival of Black Women as they celebrate Black Music month.

The celebration of the Black music month is a celebration that starts June 3rd - June 30. The event features a wide range of artists including Usher, Trina, Anderson, Tyler the creator and Justin Timberlake to celebrate women that shaped music.
