- Despite his explanation, he faced backlash from celebrities like Deeone and Isaac Fayose, who condemned the prank and vowed to petition against similar occurrences in the future
Popular social critic Martins Otse, also known as Verydarkman, has finally confirmed that the alleged N180 million theft from his NGO funds was a lie and an attempt to teach Nigerians a lesson.
The controversial influencer condemned Nigerians for hastily believing a false story and hurling insults at him and his mother without conducting a thorough investigation.
VeryDarkMan tearfully expressed his disappointment and frustration with how Nigerians reacted to the situation.
He stated: “Alright, since the N180 million went missing from the NGO account, I have been seeing comments that I never really expected would be thrown at me. But I am grateful to God because everything I have done on social media, I have done it because that is who I am and I never did it to seek public validation.
“Seeing comments made me question, what is my offence? All I do on social media is use my platform to advocate, help people collect back their money and create awareness to avoid people getting scammed. I do most things with my own money or borrowed money because I want Nigeria to be a place where people have a voice.
“Some people were even insulting my mother, calling her a thief. You know 80 per cent of the people who use social media are dumb and this whole thing that happened with the N180 million is a clear opportunity to show you, I deliberately did it to show you that you people are stupid!
“We are in a country where anything that is said on social media is believed without anybody trying to investigate it.
“Nobody sat down to analyse the issue without asking the right questions. Because of how dumb you are, the whole media has been spoiled and ruined.”
He added: “No money is missing, my money is secured. The way people are so excited about bad things is really sad. I told my website guy to shut the website and let us use these people to catch a cruise. Nobody bothered to ask for evidence. They just went with what was being said. I am so happy I did this.”
Very Dark Man went a step further to validate his claims by visiting Zenith Bank to obtain the NGO's bank statement. This confirmed that the funds were indeed intact and had not been tampered with. He also provided a detailed account of how the funds were being managed.
In a subsequent video, VeryDarkMan fired back at his critics, particularly Cater Efe, who had earlier dragged him online. Interestingly, Cater Efe had also slid into VDM's DMs for pleasantries, but VDM was having none of it. He called him out and others who had attacked him, leaving no holds barred in his response.
Despite his explanation, some celebrities widely criticised the alleged N180 million prank. Many felt that the prank was insensitive and hurtful, especially given the serious theft accusations levelled against him.
Big Brother Naija's former housemate Deeone spoke out against VeryDarkMan's actions, he stated that Zenith Bank lost some shares and suffered damage to its reputation, also in the Temu community, Ghana, some individuals were arrested and detained due to the prank.
He argued that Very Dark Man's actions were reckless and irresponsible, particularly given his position as a public speaker, and vowed to petition against the ranking to avoid further occurrences.
Isaac Fayose also condemned the prank, stating that it was unfair to deceive people using their money. "You can prank people with your own money, but not with their money," he declared.
