Over the years, the place of Nigerian albums on popular streaming platform Spotify has become both defying and record-breaking. 

The streaming numbers are incredibly increasing to set new records and achieve milestones that solidify not just their fanbase but their global status. 

Recently, Wizkid’s newly released Morayo album recorded 35.8 million streams on Spotify Nigeria in its first week of release. 

The album released on November 22, sets a new record for the biggest debut week ever for any album on the platform— surpassing the previous record by Afrobeats sensation Asake’s ‘Lungu Boy’ at 18.9M first-week streams. 

Following this, TheRadar curated a list of the biggest first-week streams by Nigerian albums on Spotify. 

Nigerian albums with biggest first-week Spotify streams

  • Wizkid— ‘Morayo’ — 35.8M

Since its release on November 22, Morayo by Wizkid has been on a record-breaking spree. A week now and it holds the biggest first-week stream ever on Spotify Nigeria. With a total of 35.2M streams, it currently holds the record. 

  • Asake — ‘Lungu Boy’ — 18.9M

Earlier in August, Asake’s Lungu Boy also shattered the record for the biggest first-week streams on Spotify, amassing a total of 18.9M streams. 

  • Davido — ‘Timeless’ —14.4M

Released in 2023, Davido’s Timeless album comes third as the biggest first-week stream on Spotify. The Amapiano and Afrobeats mix album gathered a total of 14.4M streams to reflect Davido’s versatility. 

  • Rema — ‘HEIS’ — 12.3M

In July 2024, Rema dropped his sophomore album, HEIS. The album amassed 12.3M streams in its opening week to hold the 4th spot in Spotify history. 

  • Burna Boy — ‘I Told Them’ — 9.4M

Self-acclaimed African Giant, Burna Boy takes the 5th position on the list of the biggest first-week streams on Spotify Nigeria. His 2023 album, I Told Them showcases the singer’s Afrofusion blend and proves a testament to Burna Boy’s global status. 

Other biggest first-week streams by Nigerian albums on Spotify Nigeria include: 

  • Asake — ‘Work Of Art’ — 8.3M
  • Olamide — ‘Ikigai / 生き甲斐, Vol. 1’ — 7.92M
  • Fireboy DML — ‘adedamola’ — 7.86M 
  • Wizkid — ‘S2’ - EP — 5.89M
  • Olamide — ‘Unruly’ — 5.8M
  • Shallipopi — ‘Shakespopi’ — 5.7M
  • Ayra Starr — ‘The Year I Turned 21’ — 5.18M
  • Burna Boy — ‘Love, Damini’ — 4.8M
  • Odumodublvck — ‘EZIOKWU’ — 4.7M
  • Odumodublvck — ‘EZIOKWU (UNCUT)’ — 4.6M

Global Impact List: Ayra Starr, Tems emerge as Spotify’s most streamed artistes 

Earlier, TheRadar reported that Nigerian Afrobeats artistes, Tems and Ayra Starr emerged at the top of the Global Impact List unveiled by popular streaming platform Spotify for the first half of 2024. 

Through their songs, these artistes were recognized by the streaming platform. Their songs, according to spotify, have the most listens from outside Nigeria between January 1 to June 30. 

Ayra Starr secured the first and second spots with her songs Santa featuring Rauw Alejandro and hit single Commas. On the other hand, Tems took third spot with Love Me Jeje.
