Just a few days before his inauguration as the 47th President of the United States of America on January 20, 2025, Donald Trump announced the launch of his official meme coin with the ticker $TRUMP.
Hours after the announcement, the coin pumped and printed several millionaires who invested early. A little over 24 hours after the pump, Trump’s wife, Melania, launched her meme coin with the ticker $MELANIA. TheRadar explained how the arrival of $MELANIA triggered the decline in trading price and market capitalisation of $TRUMP, so much so that the coin lost over $7 billion of its value in a few hours.
While the coin declined, several crypto enthusiasts waited and hoped that after Trump's inauguration, the coin would shoot up again and that the general crypto market would experience some bull runs. But that did not happen.
3 reasons $TRUMP may crash lower than expected
Now the question is, why did his $TRUMP not recover even after Trump's inauguration?
1. Lack of mention in inaugural address:
One significant reason $TRUMP has underperformed in the past two days is that President Trump failed to mention the project or anything about crypto in his inaugural speech. As an avid supporter of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, many crypto enthusiasts expected the president to talk about crypto and his plans for the industry in his speech.
Considering how highly significant the inaugural speech is and the message the lack of mention sends, bearish sentiments were triggered among investors.
2. Scepticism about long-term value of $TRUMP
Another essential reason $TRUMP may crash much lower than many investors' expectations is the question about its long-term value. The question about the value of meme coins has been around in the industry for some time. Some experts argue that meme coins offer no intrinsic value and should attract less attention from investors with a long-term vision.
One of the central questions is, beyond being themed after the president of the United States of America, what value does $TRUMP bring? What is $TRUMP’s utility value? Recently, investors have argued about meme coins’ potential for the pump-and-dump, which has made them wary.
3. Criticism from influential figures
Another factor that may help $TRUMP dip further is the criticism coming from notable and influential figures in the industry. Influential figures like figures like Robert Kiyosaki have criticised the coin. Although Kiyosaki has long emphasised his preference for tangible assets over speculative investments, he is big on Bitcoin.
In a post on his X handle, Kiyosaki said: “What do I think about TRUMP COIN? Not much. Unfortunately, the whole crypto world is becoming a “tranny” transforming from the “future” to a ‘farce.’ I hold my course buying real Gold, real silver, and real Bitcoin. As a personal rule, I do not invest in any ETFs. I am old, and I prefer ‘real.’”
Pastor may spend 20 years in jail for scamming members with crypto scheme he received ‘in a dream’
Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that Francier Obando Pinillo, an acclaimed pastor, may spend up to 20 years in jail for using his position to defraud members of his congregation with a crypto scheme he called Solano Fi.
Pinillo, a 51-year-old resident of the United States of America, convinced his members to ‘invest’ in the fraudulent crypto scheme, assuring them that the idea of the scheme had come to him in a dream and that it was safe.
