X killed easy creator money: Here is what Nigerian creators must fix before September

The old “post, go viral, cash out” dream is getting an eviction notice. X has ended new enrolments for its Revenue Sharing programme, and the replacement does not care how loudly you can quote-tweet. It wants original work, verified attention and a real audience. For Nigerian creators treating one platform like a salary account, September is no longer a date on the calendar. It is a stress test.

Key takeaways

  • X’s current Revenue Sharing programme ends on September 7, while access to the replacement Original Content Rewards programme begins rolling out to existing members from September 8.
  • The new hurdle is not small: creators need 500 verified followers, 500,000 qualifying Home Timeline impressions in 90 days, a paid Premium plan and regular original content.
  • The smart move is not panic-posting. It is building a creator business that can survive one app changing its mind.

The easy-money era was always a little too easy

Let’s be honest: some people built entire X pages out of screenshots, recycled celebrity gist, rage bait and other people’s hard work. The formula was simple. Find a hot tweet. Repackage it. Add a loud caption. Collect engagement. Repeat.

That formula has now met a wall.

X says its Original Content Rewards programme is built to reward people who bring ideas, expertise, reporting, creativity and commentary that push a conversation forward. Merely resharing what already exists is no longer enough. The platform has also drawn a hard line against fake engagement and deceptive behaviour in its Creator Monetization Standards.

That is bad news for copy-and-paste pages. But it is not bad news for the person who actually knows something, has a point of view or can turn one observation from the street into a conversation people want to join.

Here is the catch: the Nigerian internet has trained too many creators to chase numbers without asking who those numbers belong to. A viral post can give you 200,000 views and still leave you with nothing but screenshot evidence that you once had a good Tuesday.

The 500,000-impression wall is not motivation—it is a business test

The new programme requires at least 500 verified followers and 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users over 90 days. Reply impressions do not count. You also need to be at least 18, live where the programme is available, stay in good standing and maintain a qualifying X Premium subscription.

Read that again. The game is no longer “can you make noise?” The game is “can you consistently make people who matter stop scrolling?”

For a creator in Lagos, Ibadan, Enugu or Kano, that changes the work. You cannot rely on a midnight giveaway or one celebrity dragging somebody on the timeline. You need repeatable value. You need a format. You need people who can recognise your post before they see your handle.

This is why a niche now matters more than a vague desire to “blow.” A football analyst who explains one match properly. A beauty creator who tests products in Nigerian weather. A tech page that breaks down data costs without talking like a government circular. A food reviewer who can tell a person whether a ₦15,000 meal is actually worth leaving home for. Those are assets. Random visibility is not.

Stop renting your entire future from one app

The biggest lesson here is not even about X. It is about what happens when your rent is due and the landlord changes the rules.

Creators do not own their reach on X. They do not own it on TikTok, Instagram or YouTube either. The app owns the recommendation engine, the monetisation switch and the door that decides whether your next post meets your audience. That does not mean platforms are useless. It means treating any one of them as your only plan is dangerous.

TheRadar has already explained why creators should never depend on one platform for their income. The argument has become more urgent, not less.

Your X account should feed an ecosystem. Turn a thread into a short video. Turn a hot take into a newsletter. Move your best audience to an email list, WhatsApp Channel or Telegram community where an algorithm cannot suddenly reduce your visibility because it woke up in a bad mood.

The goal is not to be everywhere, shouting the same thing. The goal is to give your work more than one way to make money.

Original does not mean you must invent fire every morning

Some creators will hear “original content” and immediately panic. They will think every post needs a studio, a drone shot and a 12-person production team. It does not.

Original means your angle is present. It means you add something a stranger could not have copied in 10 seconds. It could be your explanation, your reporting, your humour, your personal experience or the way you organise information. It could be a clean thread about the cost of food in your area or a video explaining why an app keeps deducting small money from users’ accounts.

Use tools to work faster, but do not confuse speed with identity. TheRadar’s guide to creator-economy tools Nigerians should know makes the point: Canva, CapCut, AI and analytics can improve your output, but none of them can manufacture a point of view for you.

The street can spot recycled content from a mile away. That is why the pages that last are usually the ones people trust to explain, not just announce.

Build money around the audience, not just inside the platform

A creator who needs platform payouts to breathe is not running a business yet. They are working a shift for an algorithm.

That is not an insult. It is a warning.

Brand partnerships, affiliate links, paid communities, digital products, freelance creative work and user-generated content can all sit beside platform earnings. The strongest creators do not wait for a million followers before they start. They solve a small problem for a specific audience and give that audience a reason to return.

There are already ways Nigerian creators can earn from short-form video without millions of followers. The real flex is not being famous online. It is being useful enough that your audience, a brand or a client will pay you without first asking the algorithm for permission.

September will expose who built a page and who built a platform

Existing Revenue Sharing participants can continue earning under the old programme through September 7. From September 8, X says it will begin rolling out access for them to apply to Original Content Rewards if they meet the requirements. That distinction matters: eligibility is not entitlement, and a payout history is not a future-proof business model.

So use the next few weeks properly. Audit your last 30 posts. Remove the lazy repost habit. Pick the three topics you can discuss with real depth. Start a direct audience channel. Build one offer that does not depend on views. And make sure your account, identity checks and payout details are in order.

The old shortcut is closing. Good. The next phase will reward creators who can make people open the app because they have something worth saying. When the payout dashboard changes again, the people who survive will be the ones whose audience remembers their name—not just their last viral post.

On the new X, attention alone will not pay the bills—trust will.
