If you still think gaming in Nigeria is just about teenagers playing FIFA in a crowded viewing centre, you clearly were not at the National Theatre this week.
Lagos Games Week 2026 has officially wrapped up, and the two-day event (June 18–19) proved that the Nigerian gaming ecosystem is no longer just "emerging" — it has arrived. With packed halls, high-stakes pitch competitions and serious conversations about the future of the industry, this year's edition felt bigger and more alive than ever.
Here is a breakdown of the biggest moments from the event, who won what, and what it all means for the future of Nigerian gaming.
CodeBox Games wins the Pitch Stage
The undisputed highlight of Day 2 ("Play Without Borders") was the highly competitive Pitch Stage. Unlike last year's invite-only session, this year's competition took place on the main day, putting Nigerian indie developers front and centre.
The winner? CodeBox Games, founded by self-taught 3D artist Prosper Moses. His studio took the top prize with its debut title, Hell Bleeds — an action-adventure game set in an African-inspired world where players fight extremist voodoo worshippers to reclaim territory from supernatural control.
By beating strong finalists like Goondu Interactive (Beyond Service) and Mykiyi Entertainment (Circuit Chakula), CodeBox Games earned a massive prize: an all-expenses-paid trip to represent Nigeria at Gamescom 2026 in Germany, the world's largest gaming event.
AI enters the chat
Last year, Artificial Intelligence was the elephant in the room. This year, it was the main topic of conversation.
While many developers expressed a preference for traditional coding and design, industry leaders made it clear that AI is no longer optional. Hugo Obi, founder of Maliyo Games, addressed the topic head-on during his keynote.
"AI will not replace creativity. It will amplify it," Obi told the packed hall. "The challenge before us is not whether AI is coming. It is already here. The challenge is whether we will develop the skills and understanding necessary to use it responsibly and competitively."
The message to Nigerian developers was clear: treat AI as a tool to speed up production, not a threat to your job.
Esports gets professional
The event wasn't just for game developers; the competitive gaming community also had a massive presence.
A major highlight was the appearance of Nigerian music star Dr. Sid (Sidney Esiri), who attended as CEO and founder of Kon10dr, a pan-African esports organisation.
"We built this for Nigerian players and tournament organisers who deserve better than WhatsApp groups and spreadsheets," Dr. Sid stated, highlighting Kon10dr's platform, which offers live draws, prize pools and anti-cheat protection. The announcement of a celebrity esports team coming to the platform further bridged the gap between Nigerian pop culture and competitive gaming.
What's next for Nigerian gaming?
The biggest takeaway from Lagos Games Week 2026 is a shift in mindset. The desperate hunt for one massive "hit game" has cooled off. Instead, Nigerian studios are focusing on releasing more finished titles, building sustainable businesses and collaborating across the ecosystem.
As Bukola Akingbade, the event's convener, noted: "This is not one person's journey. Everyone in the ecosystem has a part to play, and no single person or organisation can do it alone."
With studios like Maliyo Games preparing to release new titles like Kewa's Boutique later this year, and developers like Prosper Moses heading to Germany to showcase African stories to the world, the Nigerian gaming industry is finally playing on the global stage.
