- Instagram now allows users, especially teens, to reset Feed, Explore, and Reel recommendations with just a few taps
- These features give teens more control over what they see and share
- The new guidelines ensure safer experiences for teens, supported by a Transparency Center guide for parents
Instagram has launched a new feature allowing users, particularly teens, to reset their algorithmic content recommendations across Feed, Explore, and Reels. This initiative is part of Instagram’s broader effort to create safer, more personalised, and age-appropriate user experiences.
In a statement released on Tuesday, November 19, Meta explained the motivation behind the feature: "We want to ensure everyone on Instagram, especially teens, has safe, positive, age-appropriate experiences and feels the time they spend on the platform is valuable."
The reset feature lets users clear their current recommendations with a few simple taps, offering a clean slate for curating their Instagram experience. After resetting, the platform will begin personalising recommendations anew based on the accounts and content users engage with.
Meta further elaborated:
"Your recommendations will start to personalise again over time, showing new content based on the content and accounts you interact with. When resetting, you’ll also have the option to review the accounts you're following and unfollow any that share content you no longer want to see."
During this process, teens and other users can easily review their followed accounts, giving them more control over what appears in their feeds.
Helping parents and teens stay organised
To assist users in managing their Instagram experience, the platform has partnered with organisation experts Joanna and Clea from The Home Edit. They offer practical tips for parents and teens to organise their accounts similarly to tidying their physical spaces.
"Just like organising a home, it’s important to periodically take stock of what you’re viewing on Instagram to decide if it still suits your interests or if there’s new content you’d prefer," they suggested.
Tools for personalisation and safety
Instagram has long provided tools to help users shape their content experience. Users can select “Interested” or “Not Interested” by tapping the three-dot menu on posts to fine-tune their recommendations. The new reset option builds on these tools, adding greater flexibility for teens to take control of their feeds.
In addition to the reset feature, Instagram offers several tools to enhance teens' content management:
- The following feed: Displays posts from followed accounts in chronological order.
- Favourites: Highlights posts from selected accounts, prioritising them in the feed.
- Close friends: Allows teens to limit the visibility of their Stories to a select group.
Instagram has also tightened rules around age-appropriate material to address concerns about teens encountering inappropriate content online. The platform’s Transparency Center now includes a new guide to help parents and teens understand its approach to content moderation, even for posts shared by people they follow.
