- Facebook announced that it will auto-delete live videos after 30 days, starting February 19, 2025
- Users will get notifications and have 90 days to download or transfer their videos before permanent deletion
- However, new tools were introduced for downloading, bulk saving, and transferring live videos to cloud storage
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has announced a major change to its live video storage policy.
Starting February 19, 2025, live videos on Facebook Pages and profiles will only be available for 30 days before being automatically deleted.
This marks a shift from the previous policy, where live videos were stored indefinitely.
According to Facebook, most live video views happen within the first few weeks of broadcasting.
The company explained that this update aligns its storage policies with industry standards while ensuring a better live video experience for users.
Facebook to delete older live videos
As part of this transition, Facebook will begin deleting all existing live videos that are older than 30 days.
The deletion process will happen gradually over the coming months. Users will receive email and in-app notifications before their archived live videos are removed.
Once notified, they will have 90 days to take action before their content is permanently deleted.
Facebook provides options for users
To help users keep their content, Facebook has introduced several tools for downloading, transferring, or repurposing live videos:
- Single download: Users can download individual live videos from their profiles, Pages, or Meta Business Suite by opening a video in full-screen mode, selecting the options menu (“[…]”), and clicking “Download video.”
- Bulk download: Multiple live videos can be downloaded via the Activity Log by selecting “Your live videos,” choosing a date range, and clicking “Create File.”
- Cloud transfer: Users can move their live videos to cloud storage platforms like Google Drive or Dropbox by selecting “Transfer live videos” and choosing a destination.
- Convert to reels: Facebook is offering an option to convert segments of live videos into short-form reels, allowing users to keep key moments on their profiles for a longer period.
Users can extend the deletion timeline
Facebook is also giving users an option to extend the deletion timeline by six months. To activate this extension, users must:
1. Tap the notification about live video deletion.
2. Select “Learn More.”
3. Choose “Postpone the deletion.”
4. Tap “Postpone” to confirm.
If users do not act within the extended six-month period, their videos will be permanently removed.
Instagram introduces reset feature for teens’ feed, explore, reel content
Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that Instagram launched a new feature allowing users, particularly teens, to reset their algorithmic content recommendations across Feed, Explore, and Reels.
The reset feature lets users clear their current recommendations with a few simple taps, offering a clean slate for curating their Instagram experience. After resetting, the platform will begin personalising recommendations anew based on the accounts and content users engage with.
