Brazilian sensation Vinícius Jr. took a step off the football pitch and into the pages of history as he uncovered a connection to his ancestral roots. The Real Madrid forward popular for being a target of racist slurs in the Spanish capital, uncovered that his lineage traces back to the Tikar tribe of Cameroon, a discovery made through a DNA test conducted by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) in partnership with an organization named African ancestry.

The revelation came to light on November 19, 2024, in a touching ceremony held at the Fonte Nova stadium before Brazil’s World Cup qualifier against Uruguay. Vinícius was presented with an official certificate, confirming his Cameroonian heritage, an emotional moment shared with fans and teammates. The crowd erupted into applause as the announcement was broadcast on the stadium’s giant screens.

The event was part of the CBF’s “Roots of Gold” initiative, designed to celebrate and honour the Afro-Brazilian community's rich heritage and contributions, particularly in football. CBF President Rodrigues explained the significance of the initiative, stating that it serves as a reminder of the pivotal role Afro-Brazilians have played in shaping Brazil’s identity and global success in football.

Gina Paige, the founder of African ancestry, emphasised the cultural importance of reconnecting individuals of African descent with their roots. She described the discovery as a powerful act of resistance against the erasure caused by racism and the transatlantic slave trade,

“Through this, Vini Jr. honours his heritage while continuing his advocacy for social justice both on and off the pitch,” Paige remarked.

Vinícius’ father also expressed profound joy at learning about their connection to Cameroon, “It’s important for us to know where we come from. Many Brazilians don’t know their ancestry or heritage. I’m happy we are from Cameroon too,” he said.

The Brazilian forward embraced the discovery wholeheartedly, wearing a special jersey adorned with the flags of Brazil and Cameroon during the game, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Hopefully, the gesture will further endear him to Cameroonian fans across the globe.
