Tyson Fury, the legendary British boxer and former heavyweight world champion, announced his retirement from boxing for the second time on Monday, January 13, just hours after Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua publicly expressed interest in a blockbuster fight between the two.

Fury, 36, revealed his decision via a video on social media, declaring his time in the ring had come to an end,

“I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing. It has been a blast; I’ve loved every single minute of it. Dick Turpin wore a mask,” he said.

The video was captioned:

“Thanks, it’s been a blast 💥 thanks to everyone who helped out along the way! Happy New Year 🥳. Jesus is king 👑 now & forever.”

This announcement came as a surprise to many, as anticipation for a potential fight between Fury and Joshua had been building. Joshua, during The Ring Magazine Awards on Sunday, had declared his determination to face Fury, saying, “It has to happen this year.”

Fury leaves behind a storied career that spanned over a decade and established him as one of the greatest heavyweights of his generation. With a record of 34 wins, two losses, and one draw, he retires having never suffered a knockout defeat.

The "Gypsy King" first stunned the boxing world in 2015 when he ended Wladimir Klitschko’s long-standing dominance to claim the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO, and The Ring heavyweight titles.

However, his career was interrupted by a two-and-a-half-year hiatus during which he battled mental health issues. Fury’s return in 2018 was marked by an epic trilogy against Deontay Wilder, which solidified his status as a two-time heavyweight champion.

The first fight with Wilder ended in a thrilling draw, but Fury dominated the rematches, winning by knockout in 2020 and 2021 to claim the WBC title.

Fury’s last fights were back-to-back defeats to Ukrainian heavyweight Oleksandr Usyk. In their first encounter in May 2024, Usyk handed Fury his first professional loss via split decision, becoming the undisputed heavyweight champion. A December rematch saw Fury lose again, this time by unanimous decision.

Despite speculation about a comeback and a potential fight with Joshua, Fury’s decision to retire seems definitive. His illustrious career will be remembered for his technical brilliance and larger-than-life personality.

While fans may lament the missed opportunity of a Fury-Joshua clash, Fury’s impact on boxing remains undeniable, with his achievements becoming a lasting legacy in the sport.
