- Ferdinand has criticised United's current strikers, Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee, for lacking experience and called Osimhen a proven goalscorer
- Napoli still holds Osimhen’s long-term rights but could recall and loan him elsewhere according to FIFA rules
- Osimhen has scored 16 goals and provided five assists for Galatasaray, becoming a standout performer in the Turkish league
As the January transfer window nears its close, Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has called on his former club to make an ambitious move for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.
The Nigerian forward, currently on loan at Galatasaray, has caught Ferdinand's eye as the perfect solution to United's ongoing attacking struggles.
Osimhen, 26, has been in sensational form this season, netting 16 goals and providing five assists in 20 appearances for Galatasaray, including 12 goals in just 15 league games. His lethal finishing and big-game experience make him an attractive prospect for any top European club.
Despite his loan agreement with Galatasaray, the striker remains contracted to Napoli until 2027 after signing a one-year extension before his move.
FIFA regulations allow players to feature for two clubs in a single season, leaving the door open for a potential recall by Napoli and a subsequent loan to Manchester United.
Ferdinand expressed his frustration with United's current strike force, particularly the struggles of young Danish forward Rasmus Højlund,
"I've watched him the last two games closely, and it just doesn't add up, I'd go and get Osimhen now. He guarantees goals, he’s experienced, and he’s done it at the top level," Ferdinand remarked during his match analysis
Højlund, who cost the Red Devils over £70 million in the summer, has yet to find consistency in front of goal. Ferdinand pointed out that young strikers typically need guidance from an experienced forward, a luxury Højlund currently lacks,
"He's got nobody to learn off," Ferdinand said, noting that Joshua Zirkzee, another struggling forward, is in the same boat.
Osimhen's fallout with Napoli boss Antonio Conte led to his loan move to Galatasaray last September.
While United reportedly considered PSG’s Randal Kolo Muani before his loan move to Juventus, Ferdinand believes Osimhen is the ideal target for United’s urgent needs.
With Manchester United refusing to rule out the possibility of late attacking reinforcements, Ferdinand’s endorsement of Osimhen could sway the club into action. Time is running out, but the Nigerian star’s availability and proven quality might make him the last-minute signing United desperately need.
Mikel Obi discloses plan to lure Osimhen to Stamford Bridge
Previously, TheRadar reported that as the summer transfer window drew to a close, speculation surrounding Victor Osimhen's future continued to intensify.
The Napoli striker, who has requested to leave the club, is heavily linked with a potential transfer to Chelsea. The deal could involve Romelu Lukaku moving in the opposite direction. In a concerted effort to bring the Nigerian star to Stamford Bridge, former Chelsea legends Didier Drogba and John Obi Mikel have personally reached out to Osimhen.
