- Despite uncertainty over his future, Salah emphasised his focus on winning the league, while manager Arne Slot praised him as one of the world’s best players
Egypt’s Mohammed Salah continued his blistering form as Liverpool demolished West Ham 5-0, but the African star admitted that he and the club remained “far away” from agreeing a new contract.
Salah’s dazzling performance, which included a goal and two assists, extended Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points and left fans hopeful of a first league title since 2020.
The 32-year-old’s contribution in London was yet another reminder of his influence, bringing his Premier League tally this season to 17 goals and 13 assists in just 18 matches. With 20 goals across all competitions already, Salah displayed why he remains Liverpool’s talisman, despite his looming contract expiration.
As Salah approaches the final six months of his contract, speculation surrounding his future has intensified. From January 1, he will be free to negotiate with foreign clubs, raising fears that Liverpool might lose their star man. Speaking after the game, Salah said that negotiations had not progressed,
“We are far away from that, I don’t want to put something in the media and people start saying stuff, but nothing really has moved on,” Salah admitted when asked about contract talks.
Despite the uncertainty, Salah insisted that his primary focus remained on Liverpool’s title chase.
“The only thing in my mind is that I want Liverpool to win the league and I want to be part of it, I will do my best to win the trophy. We are in the right direction, but there are other teams trying to catch up with us. We just need to stay humble and go again.”
Salah’s numbers this season have been phenomenal, with 29 goals and 24 assists across all competitions in 2024. His combined contributions have surpassed those of any other player in Europe’s top five leagues, prompting conversations about his chances of winning the Ballon d’Or.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot heaped praise on Salah, describing him as one of the best players in the world right now.
“If you look at his numbers, you can’t argue that, he could have scored more today, but I also liked his work rate for the team without the ball. He’s in a very good place,” Slot said.
Liverpool’s next match against Manchester United presents another opportunity for Salah to prove his worth. After scoring in their 3-0 win at Old Trafford earlier this season, Salah will look to continue his momentum and keep Liverpool’s title charge alive.
