- Manchester United has set their sights on Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku, planning a potential January transfer bid
- Nkunku has been restricted to cup and European matches under manager Enzo Maresca, despite an impressive scoring record
- Chelsea may be open to selling the French star to Manchester United, although negotiations could be tricky given their rivalry
Premier League side Manchester United are reportedly lining up a bid for Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku, as they look to raid Super Eagles legend Mikel Obi's former club.
Despite their financial constraints due to fair play regulations and costly managerial changes, United appear eager to bring in more attacking strength into their squad as new manager Ruben Amorim prepares for his inaugural match on November 24 against Ipswich Town.
As of Monday morning, November 11, Amorim was now officially Manchester United’s new manager but must delay his takeover of training sessions pending a work permit.
Ruud van Nistelrooy led United to a triumphant 3-0 victory over Leicester City at Old Trafford in his last interim game for the Reds. The Dutch legend, having taken on interim managerial duties, is now set to meet with Amorim, unsure of his future role at the club.
Manchester United made an enquiry to Chelsea regarding Nkunku’s availability, according to reports. Nkunku, who joined Chelsea in 2023 following two prolific seasons at RB Leipzig, has been struggling for game time under current manager Enzo Maresca.
Injury woes plagued his debut season, and now, despite nine goals from just seven domestic cup and European matches, he has been largely benched in Premier League games, with only one start all season and a single goal in ten league appearances.
Maresca, recently emphasised his preference for defensive stability, noting that players like Nkunku, Joao Felix, and Cole Palmer often compete for the same offensive roles, leading to limited opportunities for all.
Speaking after Chelsea’s 8-0 thrashing of Noah in European competition, Maresca admitted his “desire to play Nkunku more,” yet mentioned the need for “defensive balance,” which has seen Nkunku remain on the fringes in league games.
Although Nkunku is under contract with Chelsea until 2029, the Blues are reportedly willing to consider selling, though the price tag and rivalry between the clubs may complicate negotiations.
Chelsea’s openness to the idea stems from the crowded forward line and ongoing efforts to maintain balance under Maresca’s tactical style. United, on the other hand, see an opportunity to strike a deal and boost their attack.
