Liverpool’s Premier League title chase hit a roadblock on Sunday, April 5, as Fulham, led by sensational displays from Nigerian duo Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey, pulled off a dramatic 3–2 comeback victory at Craven Cottage.
Arne Slot’s men entered the game with hopes of tightening their grip on the title race, but those ambitions were dented by a clinical Fulham side spearheaded by Iwobi’s brilliance and Bassey’s defensive steel.
The Reds started on the front foot and looked to be in full control when Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring in the 14th minute.
The Argentine midfielder unleashed a thunderbolt from a distance after a neat layoff from Ryan Gravenberch. However, their lead was struck out in n time.
Just nine minutes later, Fulham responded in style. Ryan Sessegnon’s calm finish brought the Cottagers level, and from that point on, the hosts seized momentum.
The London crowd erupted in the 32nd minute when Iwobi found the net with a composed strike to make it 2–1. The Nigerian wasn’t done; just five minutes later, he turned creator, delivering an inch-perfect assist to Rodrigo Muniz, who made it 3–1 before the break.
Despite being rattled, Liverpool mounted a response in the second half. Luis Díaz clawed one back in the 72nd minute, capitalising on Conor Bradley’s smart assist. But Arne Slot’s side, desperate for an equaliser, found Fulham’s defence impenetrable.
At the heart of that resistance stood Bassey, who delivered a commanding performance. The Super Eagles defender registered 61 touches, won five of seven ground duels, and completed 38 of 42 passes with poise. His reading of the game, physical presence, and ability to intercept danger played a pivotal role in keeping Liverpool at bay.
Iwobi, meanwhile, was electric in attack. He recorded 45 touches, scored once, assisted once, completed 19 passes, and created a big chance. His directness and vision were a constant menace while also tracking back to make tackles and clearances when needed.
Bernd Leno, Fulham’s goalkeeper, picked up a late yellow card as the home side dug deep to preserve their slender lead. Yellow cards were also issued to Sasa Lukić and Emile Smith Rowe.
The result sees Liverpool miss a golden opportunity to gain ground in the title race.
