Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah continued his record-breaking form, scoring twice as Liverpool secured a thrilling 6-3 victory over Tottenham Hotspur to move four points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
The Egyptian forward’s brace not only propelled him to the top of the league’s goal-scoring charts with 15 goals but also saw him become the first player in Premier League history to record double figures for both goals and assists before Christmas.
Liverpool came into the match already assured of leading the standings on Christmas Day, courtesy of Chelsea’s earlier draw at Everton. However, Arne Slot’s men showed no signs of complacency as they stormed to a dominant first-half lead. Luis Diaz opened the scoring before Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai added their names to the scoresheet, leaving Spurs reeling before the break.
James Maddison pulled one back for the hosts, but Salah’s quick-fire double in the second half effectively ended any hopes of a Tottenham comeback. Although Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke briefly threatened to make the scoreline equal, Diaz’s second goal five minutes from time ensured Liverpool left London with all three points.
In a post-match interview, Salah acknowledged the joy in setting a new Premier League record.
Reflecting on his historic achievement, he said,
“Of course, I was not thinking about it before the game, but I’m glad to have done it. It’s something that makes me happy and proud, and I’ll keep working hard.”
Despite the celebratory mood, Salah admitted there was room for improvement, particularly in defence. He highlighted the need for greater composure at the back after conceding three goals, remarking,
“We were quite good up front, but I think defensively we need to improve as a team. Conceding three goals is disappointing, but it’s a good result, and we will just keep going.”
Salah also praised Tottenham’s style of play, acknowledging the intensity of the match and the physical and mental demands it placed on the players.
Liverpool’s victory marked their first win in three Premier League outings boasting six wins and two draws from eight fixtures.
