- Kylian Mbappe’s ‘X’ account was hacked, leading to posts promoting the cryptocurrency ‘$MBAPPE’
- The hacker posted messages about Manchester United, claiming Mbappe would join the club in 2028
- Mbappe has since regained control of his account and is focused on his upcoming match
In the early morning hours of Thursday, August 29, French football sensation Kylian Mbappe's ‘X’ account was compromised. Fans were stunned to see multiple posts promoting a cryptocurrency named ‘$MBAPPE,’ leaving many wondering if the star was endorsing the digital coin.
The fallout from the hack was swift and dramatic. The sudden posts sent the value of ‘$MBAPPE’ skyrocketing to tens of millions within minutes, only to crash back down to zero shortly after.
Reports indicate that one lucky investor who put $29 into the tokens managed to sell at the peak, making an astonishing profit of around $125,000 before the market corrected itself.
These suspicious posts sparked debates among fans and followers about whether the footballer was genuinely promoting the coin or if his account had been hijacked.
The incident exposed the vulnerabilities of high-profile social media accounts, especially accounts owned by athletes with large followings and the unpredictable nature of cryptocurrency markets.
The situation also brought about discussions on meme coins all over the X app, cryptocurrencies that often lack practical applications and are driven more by internet memes and trends.
Memecoins like Dogecoin and Shiba Inu have gained popularity for their playful nature, but they are often seen as more of a social media phenomenon than a serious investment.
The hacker's unauthorised tweets continued with the statement “Manchester is Red,” clearly referencing Manchester United.
The hacker also praised a popular Manchester United fan account, @UTDTrey, calling it “the best account on ft.” In a bizarre twist, a tweet from Mbappe’s account claimed that he would join Manchester United in 2028 on a free transfer, saying, “I’m going to @ManUtd, 2028 LET’S RUN IT UP ON A FREE TRANSFERRRR.”
In a disturbing turn, the hacker also made political comments about the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, using anti-semitic and offensive language.
At the time of writing, Mbappe had seemingly regained control of his account, and all the controversial posts had been deleted. Despite the online drama, Kylian Mbappe remained focused on preparing for Real Madrid’s upcoming match against Las Palmas.
The French striker, who recently found the net in the UEFA Super Cup, is still in search of his first domestic goal this season, having taken nine shots and put five on target across two La Liga matches.
