Chelsea’s star forward Cole Palmer has written his name into Premier League history books, setting a new record for the most consecutive successful penalties in the league.
The Chelsea playmaker’s 12th straight spot-kick conversion came during Sunday’s thrilling 4-3 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, making him one of the coolest finishers in football.
Palmer scored twice from the penalty spot, including a cheeky ‘Panenka’ that left Spurs keeper helpless and effectively sealed the points for Chelsea. The feat broke the previous record held by Manchester City legend Yaya Touré, and yet, remarkably, Palmer does not practice penalties in training.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca confirmed this surprising detail, calling Palmer “not normal” and praising his natural talent,
“Since we started, I haven’t seen Cole shooting penalties, but it’s Cole, and you have to expect anything. Top players do things that make us wonder, ‘How can he do that?’”
Chelsea’s victory was far from straightforward. The team found themselves trailing 2-0 within 11 minutes after goals from Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski, both stemming from defensive errors by Marc Cucurella.
The Spanish defender switched boots after his second costly slip, later posting on social media that his discarded pair had been binned.
The comeback began with a goal from Jadon Sancho before Palmer coolly converted his first penalty to equalise. Enzo Fernandez then added a third, and Palmer’s daring Panenka secured the win.
Maresca reflected on the chaotic match, acknowledging the mental and tactical growth his side showed.
“To come to this stadium and think you’re going to win without suffering is impossible, probably, giving away two goals in 15 minutes was too much. But it’s the perfect win, because we fought back and showed togetherness,” Maresca added.
Chelsea’s determination shone through, with Palmer leading the charge as the team continued to adapt under Maresca’s management. While Cucurella’s misstep caused some drama, it was Palmer’s ice-cold penalties and bold instincts that stole the spotlight.
