The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) is an esteemed international initiative aimed at supporting individuals from developing countries in their pursuit of higher education and capacity building. 

Sponsored by the Government of Japan and the World Bank, this program fosters leadership and expertise in development-related fields by offering scholarships for master's degree programs at top universities worldwide.

The JJ/WBGSP focuses on nurturing future leaders who will contribute to the socio-economic development of their home countries. 

The scholarship is available for a range of programmes related to development, economics, public policy, and other disciplines critical to sustainable development. 

Scholars benefit from high-quality education and exposure to international networks, ensuring they return to their countries equipped with knowledge and skills to drive impactful change.

Eligibility criteria for JJ/WBGSP

To qualify for the JJ/WBGSP, applicants must meet specific requirements:

1. Nationality: Applicants must be citizens of a World Bank member country listed as eligible for the scholarship. These countries are typically low—and middle-income.

2. Educational background: A bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) earned at least three years prior to the application deadline. Demonstrated academic excellence and commitment to development.

3. Professional experience: At least three years of recent development-related work experience.

4. Admission to a JJ/WBGSP partner programme: Applicants must have been admitted to a master’s program at one of the JJ/WBGSP’s preferred or partner universities.

5. Other conditions: Applicants must not have received previous scholarships under the JJ/WBGSP. Applicants must not be relatives of World Bank employees.

Benefits of JJ/WBGSP

The JJ/WBGSP is fully funded and provides the following benefits:

1. Full tuition coverage: Payment of tuition fees for the approved master’s programme.

2. Living stipend: Monthly allowances for living expenses, including accommodation and meals.

3. Travel expenses: Round-trip airfare between the scholar’s home country and the host institution, including a travel allowance for settling in and returning home.

4. Health insurance: Comprehensive medical coverage during the study period.

Application process for JJ/WBGSP

The JJ/WBGSP application process is highly competitive and consists of several stages:

1. Check eligibility: Ensure you meet the scholarship's eligibility requirements, including securing admission to a partner university.

2. Prepare required documents: Gather all necessary documentation for submission.

3. Submit online application: Complete and submit the application form through the World Bank’s official scholarship portal before the deadline.

Applicants must provide the following documents:

1. Proof of admission: An unconditional offer letter from a JJ/WBGSP partner university.

2. Identification documents: A copy of a valid passport or national ID.

3. Academic records: Certified copies of transcripts and degree certificates.

4. Professional references: Two recommendation letters from supervisors or employers highlighting the applicant’s contributions to development.

5. Statement of purpose: A detailed essay explaining career goals, motivation, and how the program aligns with the applicant's aspirations.

6. Proof of employment: Documents verifying work experience in a development-related role.
