- Nigerians have cried out over the impact of the industrial action as many are unable to carry out their day-to-day activities
- There is total blackout in the country after the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) joined the strike
- Aviation unions have also urged members to withdraw services from all airports as financial activities are equally disrupted
People are unable to access basic services like power, education, and transportation, as many workers in various regions of the country are locked out of their offices.
Here are some of the points Nigerians are feeling the impact of the ongoing strike:
No checking-in or boarding at airports
Nigeria's aviation unions have urged its members to withdraw services from all of the country's airports.
According to Punch, as early as 7:00 a.m., airport workers from the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals (ANAP) and the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) blocked vehicles from entering the Port Harcourt Airport.
According to Emmanuel Akagha, Chairman of the Rivers State Chapter of the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals, passengers are still able to enter the airport because the road leading to it connects several towns. He did, however, state that no check-in or boarding is authorised.
Students sent out of schools
Labour officials have also shut out students from schools, including the Kaduna Polytechnic, as part of the strike action.
Public schools did not also operate as teachers in different states across the country showed their solidarity.
Nigerians react to labour strike
“Monthly take home of Nigerian Senator is N29M yet workers are receiving 30K as salary that can’t buy foodstuffs for 30 days. On a scale of 30K, Nigeria senators cater approximately 96.67% of salary. God who swear for this nation?” IamLizKid
“They don’t want to see ordinary citizens feel good, they want us suffering every time” Godday monte
“Which one is where is he going to see money to pay 100K minimum wage? When he increased fuel from 180 to 750 did he ask us where we will see money to buy it?” The Apostle
“What a Nigerian Senator Earns in a month. FG and NLC coming from 400K to 60K is totally insane” Chima Achonwa
“Put politicians on minimum amount wage and watch how fast things change” Mr Ok
Banks urged to join strike
Banks and other financial institutions have also been urged to join the strike as labour unions did not allower bank workers to enter their offices in some states. Customers were also not left out of the barricade. This is as the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institution Employees (NUBIFIE) wrote to their members to join.
Lagos, Ogun, Edo, and other states comply
Employees were locked out, and commercial operations were suspended in Alausa, the location of the majority of state government buildings in Lagos. The NLC's Lagos State Chairman claims that the union is working to make sure that the executives' direction is followed.
The federal secretariat in Abeokuta, Ogun State, was empty following the directives of national leaderships of NLC and TUC.
Members of the NLC and TUC in Edo, Kaduna, Cross River and Imo State also joined their colleagues in the indefinite strike.
