- Governor Zulum dissolved the Borno State Executive Council
- Commissioners were directed to hand over duties by April 3, 2026
- The move was aimed at enabling political participation ahead of elections
Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has approved the immediate dissolution of the Borno State Executive Council, a move widely seen as paving the way for cabinet members interested in contesting in the forthcoming general elections.
The decision was announced in a statement issued on Monday by the Secretary to the State Government, Bukar Tijani, who explained that the action forms part of efforts to create an enabling environment for political participation.
According to the directive, all commissioners have been instructed to hand over the affairs of their respective ministries to Permanent Secretaries on or before Friday, 3 April 2026. The transition is expected to ensure continuity in governance while allowing political appointees to pursue electoral ambitions without conflict.
The dissolution of the Executive Council marks a significant administrative step as the political landscape gradually shifts towards preparations for the next general elections. It is a common practice in Nigerian politics for serving officials to step aside or relinquish appointments ahead of elections in which they may seek elective positions.
Governor Zulum, while announcing the decision, expressed his gratitude to the outgoing commissioners for their service to the state. He commended their dedication, commitment, and contributions to governance and development in Borno State.
“Their efforts have significantly supported the administration’s drive to improve the welfare of citizens and deliver key projects across various sectors,” the statement noted.
Political analysts suggest that the move may trigger increased political activity within the state, as former commissioners and other stakeholders begin consultations and strategising ahead of party primaries.
The handover to Permanent Secretaries is also expected to maintain administrative stability, ensuring that government operations continue uninterrupted during the transition period.
As Borno State moves closer to the election season, attention is likely to shift towards emerging candidates, party alignments, and the broader political dynamics shaping the state’s future.
