United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has raised fresh alarm over the growing humanitarian and geopolitical fallout from the escalating Middle East crisis, warning that its impact is no longer confined to the region.

As the conflict enters its third month, Guterres said the consequences are being felt across the globe, with rising concern over the humanitarian cost and increasing pressure on international peace efforts.

In a statement shared on Friday, May 1, via his X account, the UN chief said, “The Middle East crisis is in its third month & the whole of humanity is paying the price”.

His remarks come amid mounting fears over the wider implications of the war, including civilian suffering, regional instability, and the strain on ongoing diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.

Guterres urged all parties involved in the conflict to act with restraint and avoid steps that could worsen tensions or derail fragile progress toward peace.

“All sides must refrain from actions that could undermine the ceasefire,” he said.

The Secretary-General stressed that while ceasefire efforts remain critical, temporary pauses in violence alone will not be enough to resolve the crisis or address the deeper issues driving the conflict.

According to Guterres, only a long-term political solution can prevent further devastation and restore stability in the region.

“The world needs a peaceful, comprehensive, and durable resolution to the conflict,” he added.

His warning comes as global concern continues to grow over the worsening humanitarian situation in the Middle East, with world leaders and international organisations renewing calls for diplomacy, de-escalation, and sustained peace efforts.

Guterres’ latest remarks reinforce the United Nations’ position that urgent diplomatic action is needed to contain the crisis and prevent its consequences from spreading even further beyond the region.

UN chief Guterres demands release of 118 detained staff worldwide

Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, had called for the immediate release of 118 United Nations personnel currently detained across the world, amid growing concerns over the safety of humanitarian workers.

The UN chief highlighted the situation in Yemen as particularly alarming, noting that 73 UN staff members remain in detention under the control of the de facto Houthi authorities. Among them are eight staff from the UN’s human rights office.
